Another weird, this-time-slightly-off day.

After Alex posted in Facebook that it was the 16th anniversary of Nell's death, I found it hard keep from getting distracted by very unfocused thoughts about her - in particular, the change in my life that was triggered by her passing.

The thoughts were not so much cinematic remembrances, as a reliving of some of the emotions I had, kind of like recalling a smell, but, after time has passed, more the smell made you feel than any technically accurate recall.

And so it was - I looked one way, started doing something, and was distracted by an emotional non-sequitur. A moment to identify the attached memory, then back, but to something else.

When my thoughts did turn to Nell - and they did, as happens with me, as they have for more than thirty years - I bounce back and forth between the early years of our relationship to the end of the marriage and, later, her death. I had known her for fourteen years at the time of her death - we were together only for the first six.

There's a lot of emotional peaks and valleys, over time. The flow of emotions I felt were happy-warm now, hurt and cold then.

The entire time Nell and I were together, I didn't play music. I listened, put together a few killer stereo systems and amassed a large collection of music, but I didn't play. Getting back to playing was the first healing thing I did for myself, and I didn't start playing again with that in mind at all.

But I digress.

This distraction took me out of the present, and although it made following any process to completion without interruption impossible, it didn't keep me from making some meals, going to the grocery, and voting, but made each of those simple things (driving, for instance) maximally inefficient. And tiring.

The thing that shifted my focus still seems difficult to focus on. It isn't elusive, it's that it is like that magnet game, where one circular magnet repulses another - you can't quite make them touch, although you can get close. You get exhausted from trying.

And maybe that's the takeaway - I became stressed over it, and every attempt to move it to a place where I could let it go felt like work accomplishing nothing. In the end, I gave up, and went inert, because I really felt too tired to go out. Eventually, I fell asleep watching TV, early.

Somehow, I haven't given up the idea of relationships, but I'm not looking for one, either.

I have a good deal of fear when I think about being intimate. I am basically an introvert who doesn't mind being in crowds of people, and I get energized by performing.

I try to be open and honest at all times, but fail when it comes to establishing real intimate connections.

100% of all my past intimate relationships with women have failed on me disappointing their expectations in some regard. To them, it was me not stepping up. To me, it was their not accepting me for who I really was, as opposed to their 'ideal' of me.

But I take responsibility. I don't think I present a good picture of who I am when out in public. That's a trick I learned from my parents, I guess. Stop face-palming, Freud.

My parents presented a public version of themselves that was very different, and much more attractive, than what I saw at home.

I do the same. And it is attractive. I present as having things all together, which is pretty far from true, and as someone who is happy, which is pretty true.

But when that attraction gets me into potentially intimate circumstances, I deflect.

That's what letting your past override your present does. I have fear. I remember the pain. I feel my present circumstances are so good, I'm afraid to risk letting someone breach the walls of now.

This may be my biggest current failure, and I believe it is at the root of all my dissatisfactions.

I may or may not resolve it, but if that is the worst of my present condition, I have nothing but gratitude for being alive.

#1748, Monday, October 17: Happiness and pleasure

Daily Comment
Early this morning, I read an article about 'The Happiest Man' - Matthieu Ricard, a former biochemist turned Buddhist Monk. Apparently, he doesn't think he's the happiest guy, but he's happy. He's also an author, and I bought his book, Happiness: A Guide to Developing Life's Most Important Skill.

Only a few dozen pages into it, and I'm getting the basic truth I believe, reaffirmed: Happiness doesn't depend on external circumstances. I have believed it is a choice, Ricard believes it is a skill, something that, like any skill, can be learned through practice and application.

I came to this determination on my own, many years ago, but still managed to get caught up in external things (health problems, relationship drama, financial pressure, etc.). It wasn't until I had come far in restoring order to my life post-divorce and relocation, then was placed in financial jeopardy again by being laid off that I began putting it into practice, just about six years ago.

It has made all the difference in the world to me. And it has only gotten more entrenched with practice... Now, it is my default mode, and people I encounter notice it - apparently, I look happy, which makes sense.

The idea that you could choose to be happy, that it was a thing that you could generate from within yourself, is, as far as I'm concerned, a basic tenet of Buddhism, at least as I understand it. But I really got to it, on an intellectual level, after hearing an interview with Marci Shimoff promoting her then-new book, Happy For No Reason. While I never read the book, the gist of the interview was a condensation of many things I had read over the decades, and I happened to be receptive at the time. Something clicked, a seed planted in the sixties sprouted...

One of the key things that is emphasized by Ricard is the difference between happiness and pleasure - or rather, the relationship between the two.

Some feel that humans are a pleasure-seeking species. Some think we're a pain-avoiding species. I think we're naturally meant to be happy, and that neither pleasure nor pain can do more than influence us temporarily.

That seems to be the key: Pleasure is always temporary - sometimes fleeting. It is also highly circumstantial, and subject to many ephemeral forces and conditions. Happiness, on the other hand, has its source in attitude, or world-view, and little to do with sensory input, the source of pleasure. At least once you understand it that way.

Decades of meditation practiced intermittently certainly helped me. Meditation has helped me become less reactive and more centered. Maturity enters into it, too - my days of chasing shiny objects is pretty much in the past.

My feelings of gratitude were instrumental, as well, in bringing about this state of happiness I feel I've cultivated. Maybe more than anything else.

But despite the internal and lasting (happiness), vs external and temporary (pleasure), the important thing, as far as I'm concerned, is that both exist. You may not be able to cultivate and maintain pleasure, but you can enjoy it when it comes. While pursuit of pleasure may not be the way to get to happiness, like chicken soup, a little pleasure can't hurt. Take it when it comes, but don't expect to be able to hold onto it. That expectation is a prophylactic for happiness.

My life seems to be a long, at times tortuous trip of discovering the difference between pleasure and happiness, and also, how they relate: one is the short-lived, external-dependent and sometimes more intense manifestation of the other's abiding, boundless, internal nature.

With no opportunity to play out anywhere today, I let myself be lethargic.

The day's personal accomplishment: A load of laundry done.

Doesn't seem like a lot, but it was something, and satisfied the day's ambitions as well.

I also dropped by my friend Al's to pick up a thank you note from the couple I married last month. They each wrote me a note, and I was very touched. To top it off, I was able to give Al a ride to the airport. He hadn't asked me because he was returning late Sunday night, and didn't want to mess with my playing. He was going to leave his car in the lot. I was having none of it, and took him to the airport, and will pick him up Sunday night.

I look forward to doing favors for people. It makes me feel good. I consider someone asking me for a favor to be giving me a gift, an opportunity to be, in some small way, good. Let's just say it's an enlightened kind of selfishness.

Then I got a call to sub for a friend who is not going to be able to be house bass for a weekly open mic after some surgery in November.

Just like that, things that worried me recently started turning around.

Lucky, and damned grateful, too!

The fun of the jam was in full force at Shifty's tonight.

After leading a short set, I got to back up a new guitarist-singer, from (slightly) out of town, on his first night at Shifty's open mic.

He played well, choosing some fairly familiar songs, rocking out. The house guitarist and drummer (who played on my set, too) are stellar musicians, and we gave him great backup, and, for once, I had a chance to stretch out a little.

I got a kick out of that - in the zone as I was - and really enjoyed myself.

Later, I connected with a good drummer I had played with, and backed up the singer/guitarist and lead guitarist from The Token Few, a band I may play bass with regularly, on a long jammy set, which also turned out pretty well. There was a song in there that apparently broke the drummer, and the rhythm section was a little less than together - briefly. But you move right along. I found some good grooves, and the few moments that didn't click gave way to better stuff.

Then I let a friend play my bass on a set, so I got to hear approximately how it sounded 'in the house' (approximately, since a lot of the sound comes in the right (plucking) hand, which wasn't mine, obviously) and I was very pleased.

The house bass player (another friend, of course), was very flattering, and all around, I had a great night, and celebrated with an ice cream treat (that's what drinking will do, I guess).

All around, a night to be grateful for.

Like the hurricane that chased me out of Florida, I have lost strength over the last few days.

Since completing my twenty-four hours of driving (accomplished last Thursday and Friday), and my day-long commitment as house bass on Saturday, I have been losing energy. I tried to prop myself up with a lot of playing Sunday night, but didn't gain any energy from it, as is typically the case.

And, i am Fool is in the doldrums, as we haven't found a way to be in the same place at the same time. It has been three weeks since we last played together, and various members' schedules are apparently keeping us from playing again for at least another two weeks.

I have some other projects in the works, but none inspire me the way playing with i am Fool does. Sigh.

I am tired, but still in the game. I went out to sign up to play tonight, but lost my desire after waiting around for setup. I went home, did some bookkeeping, and watched tv and made dinner...

It's easy to believe that my lethargy is in direct proportion to the amount of TV I watch, and tonight, I watched more than I can remember in a long time.

I have no gigs booked in the future - that weighs heavily on me.

I can't wait to see what this change becomes for me...

When every negative seems to generate a compensating positive, it seems to be a matter of enduring, of continuing to show up, and let things work themselves out.

My second consecutive on-plan day, and the loss begins. So far, so good. Actually, I was just hoping after the huge snack-style dinner, replete with cheese and pork rinds (high in salt), wouldn't undo the good. Macronutrients won the day, though.

I left for Florida ten days ago, on a pretty nice Saturday.

I drove twelve hours to my friend Jerry in Pittsboro, North Carolina.

We spent Sunday talking, catching up, then, Monday morning, I drove nine hours to Wilbur on the Sea, Florida (just south of Daytona Beach). I got there about eight o'clock.

We spent Tuesday talking and catching up, then Wednesday we went boating and fishing in the Bay, since the ocean was too rough for fishing.

When we got back from a great day of fishing, the evacuation warnings started coming. I helped with the hurricane prep for a while, but when I had done pretty much everything I could, and the decision had been made to evacuate, I left.

I drove all night, and Thursday morning I arrived in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, just as my friend Ken was getting his kids off to school and himself off to sleep.

I slept all day, then booked a hotel room outside Harrisburg, PA, and drove there in about seven hours.

I got back home last Friday, after an eight-hour drive.

Saturday, I played at a benefit. On a break, I called my friends down in Florida. I found out they rode out the hurricane inland, and returned to find the house mostly okay, with some minor exterior damage, no interior problems.

Something to be grateful for!
