Back in November, I began having symptoms that reminded me of the time in 2006 when I had a trans-urethral resection of my prostate (TURP), a very common procedure among middle-aged (and older) men.
The hallmark symptom that precedes the operation is having to pee frequently and urgently. The cause is an enlarged prostate gland.
I have been peeing frequently for as long - actually longer - than I've been writing this blog. After August's surgery, though, I started having occasional urgency. If you don't know what that means, it means a very brief window of time between when you realize you have to pee and when you start peeing - like, seconds.
As things worked out, I saw my Primary Care Physician (who's actually a PA, not a doctor) and he referred me to a urologist. An appointment was made for early January. That appointment was then postponed by the office to today.
In the meantime, things got better on the peeing front - not too much of a problem lately. I kept the appointment, just to get checked out (last time I paid any real attention was more than ten years ago). It occurred to me that the problem could have been due to my raft of new medications, or a bladder problem, besides a prostate problem, and figured it was worth it (100% covered by insurance) to see.
I got a clean bill of health, and there was no discomfort involved in the exam. One less thing to think about.
I'm grateful for the health I have.
