Tonight is my weekly turn as house bass player at the open mic at the Flat Iron Grill.
It's always a fun time. And it is the most me-like musical thing I do.
The open mic doesn't run particularly late, unlike most of the other open mics I go to (at least the ones that start in the evening. I didn't sleep well last night, though, so it's good that I have a day off tomorrow.
This time my sleep fell into an old insomnia pattern: I wake up and can't fall back asleep. I'm not too concerned about that. Mostly because of that day off tomorrow.
But before that, the gig. It was great to see a lot of old friends - a lot! People I hadn't seen in over a year. and, of course, we continue to have a lot of good music. These are good times, indeed.
I'm beginning to plan my first post-retirement getaway, to visit my friends Marco and Sophie down in South Daytona.
I'd like to go in February (the worst month to be up here in Syberiacuse). But its difficult. It's high season, airfare is expensive - much more so than I've ever seen before (double or more in most cases). Also, my gig schedule in February is an obstacle to deal with. I'm unwilling to miss more than one of my open mic gigs, and I already have a bunch of gigs booked for February.
Life can only be described as wonderful when these are the kinds of challenges put in my way.
I'm grateful for my wonderful life, for my very existence. I still think I'm the luckiest guy I know. And optimistic that I shall overcome any obstacles - or understand the opportunities even obstacles present.
