After my diagnosis of Diabetes Type 2, and along with a then-current hypertension diagnosis, two things happened immediately. I was given an appointment with an Ophthalmologist to be screened for diabetes- and hypertension-related complications, and I went on a diet that included starting this blog.

I've seen that eye doctor every six months since then. And every six months I am given a clean bill of health. Today, I was told to come back in a year.

The hypertension issue is long since gone - it was over before I reached my weight loss goal; so it was an obesity-related issue - a problem solved by losing a little weight.

My doctor is very proactive. He has caught some things, and made the diagnosis my previous doctor of twenty-three years, down in North Carolina, would only warn me about. "You don't want to become diabetic," he had said. New doctor: "That ship has sailed."

This is the best part. I started this blog as part of my weight loss goal. But that goal wasn't even primarily to get down to a certain weight (although the goal of getting down to 200 pounds was definitely included).

The goal was to get off all my meds (except thyroid hormone, which was the only med I was taking not associated with being overweight, and which i have been taking for twenty-six years).

I have never taken medicine to control my diabetes - I have controlled it successfully by incorporating a low-carbohydrate diet into my life. That change has been maintained and has worked for over four years.

Shortly after my weight was lost, my blood pressure dropped to athlete numbers, and I stopped the medicine I was taking for hypertension.

Shortly after that, my dose of statins was drastically reduced, and last year I unilaterally stopped taking that medicine (an idea my doctor hates, but I waited six months, after two good reports on my quarterly blood work, before I told him about it).

I'm such a little devil.

    1. I actually didn't figure anything out. I just set a goal, and did some things to get healthier, and it worked itself out.
