Today I received notice that my retirement paperwork had been received and approved. All the rest of the details will be processed by the VA Retirement group, and then transferred to the Federal Office of Personnel Management, and my ties to the VA and this job will be complete.
Done deal for me. The only things left to do with my retirement are to work out the details of my new health insurance benefits when I sign up for Medicare Part B. And get rid of the books on my shelves in the office (none coming home with me).
Neither is particularly taxing and both have wide windows of time to get accomplished.
I am, as always, grateful for the twisting, winding path that has led up to this moment, and am grateful for the fun I'm having.
I wrote the news on my Facebook page, got a lot of positive comments, and this one: "That is going to be the longest 59 days of your life." I replied with this:
I don't think so. I have a near-perfect job, software support for the VA. Its only shortcoming is its attendance requirement, which means I can't sleep in the day after a gig. So it has to go. And while I am watching the clock, and know exactly how many months, weeks and days - and workdays - I have left, that is something I've been doing for almost two years. Right now, except for my job, I have been living exactly the way I expect to live after retirement. But after, I hope I'll be better-rested. Meanwhile, I'm too busy being grateful for all I have to be thinking a lot about the time passing, which will go fast, because I'm having so much fun. That is pretty much all I know about my retirement: That when it comes, I'm going to un-set my alarm clock.
And sleep in whenever I want to or need to.
Except for that change, I might as well be retired right now. I am living my future. Almost. Because, you know, the future never exists. It just might. In the future, which... ahh, you get the idea.
