Today is a significant anniversary. Eight years ago, I reached goal weight, which was 200 pounds. I had been on a weight-loss program for just over six months: 183 days. I lost 53 pounds, just over 20% of my starting weight (253 lbs.). The date was July 2, 2011.
The impetus for losing the large amount of weight was being diagnosed with diabetes type 2 at the end of November, 2010. I was told to lose weight or start taking medication. I did some research and started my diet just over a month later, on New Year's day, 2011.
The diet I was on was taken from a book I read an excerpt from, The 4-hour Body (Tim Ferris) which was a widely hyped best-seller book that made a lot of sense to me, especially since it allowed for a certain amount of experimentation. With a few slight variations, and then a major departure (when I reacted badly to the quantity of beans the diet insisted on), I followed the plan exactly for six months.
I've been pretty much following the eating plan I was on at the end of that period ever since, although I haven't been as rigid, and I allow myself to go off-plan when I travel.
By definition, losing weight and keeping it off for more than one year is the definition of a successful dieter. According to my psychologist sister, my keeping the weight off for as long as I have is something like permanent, and makes me a member of a very, very small club.
After I maintained that weight for about a year, my regular blood tests indicated a more normal blood sugar level, and in-range A1c numbers. After a few years of steady test results, my doctor said I was no longer considered diabetic.
So, I'm happy with the way I eat, and I don't expect to change anything about the way I deal with food any time soon.
I have a new goal now (190 pounds), and to reach it, I'm going to be a little more strict about going off-plan. I was going to start that yesterday, but it will have to be tomorrow.
I'm grateful for my good health, and for finding my way to a livable relationship with eating.
