I'm not sure what the word is for knowing some right/true thing, and behaving as if it weren't so, but whatever it is, that word describes me, and, anecdotally, everybody else I know.
For instance, some of my behavior is based on my certain knowledge of mortality, but other behaviors defy that concept.
Similarly, I believe that attachment is the cause of disappointment, loss and suffering, but still form new attachments and still have attachments that give me pleasure.
Thing is, here in the material world, knowing a 'Truth' and acting on it are different things. However, even if your actions are not consistently aligned with your beliefs or knowledge, those times when you are in the moment point, or 'the now' or just plain Now and you do act consistently bring you rewards that don't end when the action is 'complete'.
That is the beauty of it. Those times when you are mindful inform your whole existence. Why? Because those times when you're not mindful tend to have their own built-in limitations, their own lessons of life.
Mindfulness is not a judge and jury, either. Very little that goes on in the present, when you're mindful and paying attention, requires much thinking. Things are good that way. Thinking gives rise to the 'I and thou' separation. Duality doesn't exist without thinking about it.
Yeah, that's the ticket.

I looked at your comment, then re-read what I wrote. That led to making a few very minor, and not idea- or meaning-changing edits, just to make clear. If you re-read, you might not even notice them. If you don't re-read, you definitely will not.
ReplyDeleteI crack me up.
I am not sure we are ever mindful- rather- our consciousness is always writing a script about what we are doing.
ReplyDeleteJoan, You may be right. i don't know, do You? Let's just breathe and pay attention with a spirit of inquiry, and find out for our Self. O.K.?

didn't mean to sound judgemental about it. I think being aware of what we are doing, when we are doing it and what we feel and sense when we do it is very helpful.
