The main thing about Cheaper By the Dozen (the book, and the first movie version) that I remember is the father, a world-renowned, pioneering efficiency expert, giving efficiency lectures to his family, insisting everything be done with the least effort possible.
It made a huge impression on me. Even as a youngster, I didn't want to work one joule harder than I had to - at anything.
That amounts to avoiding all unnecessary work, and this is where things get tricky. Some things lend themselves to this, and the experience is improved. Others, not so much.
Recently, another bass player's girlfriend told us that I make bass playing look easy. Which, the way I do it, it is, but it looks like that because I don't jump around stage, or flail with the fingers of either hand. My movements are, for the most part, the minimum it takes to get the job done, without melodramatic expressions to convey reaching deep into my soul to pull out the bass parts I play.
My right (plucking hand) frequently looks to the audience as though it is motionless.
On the other hand, the same 'logic' is the reason my apartment is such a mess. No little thing 'needs' to be cleaned up right away. But the little messes accumulate into a big one.
There's probably a golden mean, or a better perspective to deal with that, like seeing that it is more efficient to clean as you go than turn it into a big, laborious job. But, for whatever reason, I don't perceive it like that.
I'm just too freakin' lazy.

Please don't give laziness a bad name. You are not lazy. You are being self-indulgent (probably reflecting the trauma and dysfunction of our "Cinderella" childhood experiences).

LOL, "giving laziness a bad name". Thank you. And, yes, self-indulgent, too. Rationalizing instead of resolving. Lots of ways to put it...
