#1438, Monday, June 1: Resistance to change

I'm getting some weird push-back on my acoustic guitar/vocal outings, from some of the people running the open mics I go to.

I have been passed over on the list. Not called. On a couple of occasions, it was after being asked to back somebody up on bass. On those occasions I made it clear that I would do it, but hadn't come to play bass. But it doesn't seem to matter - I'm passed over, as though I hadn't signed up for a set, or declared my intention.

Even if I suck as a guitarist-singer, no excuse - I have seen all these people let horrible performers do their thing on stage, week after week. And, I don't think I'm that horrible. The feedback for past performances has been positive and encouraging.

I think people don't want me to change from the bass-playing side-man they have come to know. In other words, my stepping out of my comfort zone to play guitar and sing has also pushed them out of their comfort zone. They have me 'pegged' as a bass player, and are unwilling to change their label of me, just because it may be irrelevant.

It has happened three or four times.

And the thing that bothers me is the lack of quid pro quo: I have been, in both cases, very supportive of them, in some cases, uniquely so.

Oh, well - I will just release this, let it go, and try out some different open mics for a while, with gratitude to be in a place and time where I have a choice.

  1. i think their actions towards you have nothing to do with the quality of performance. When everyone is acting in their own perceived self-interest, when ego and money advantage is at stake, those who are sincere and noncompetitive are the most likely to be mistreated. Like in the Mideast, alliances are fluid and constantly changing. It is nice that you have alternatives and know how to improvise.

  2. I tend to agree with Andy. I think people are selfish and try to get what they can. Not sure about picture.
