#1433, Friday, May 22: Future lolling

Daily Comment

I need some time off, just not time off from playing.

I need to not have to wake up early in the morning. I need to be able to put things off to the next day, knowing there will actually be time to do them the next day. Alright, that's a tall order, you can't really know what the next day will bring, but you know what I mean - not feeling the pressure of having to do everything now.

Tomorrow is just that. I don't have anything on my schedule. I don't have anything to do Sunday morning, either.

So I intend to loll.

Man, I am ready for retirement.

  1. Ken -In my opinion, people need to look to nature for solutions. Nature seeks balance always. In human activities balance is needed for the integrity, harmony, peace of mind.

    1. I agree. But I don't live what I consider a 'natural' existence. Or, if the way I'm living is natural, I don't see the balance. I push myself to take care of things I consider important, and it bends me out of my 'natural' shape.

  2. Balance in this case would be something like this:
Since two of the three activities are necessary (a minimum # of hours of sleep for maintenance and your job that you are committed to) and the one that you want is flexible, then you decrease the # of hours or/and gigs to allow for more sleep, while still finding the joy of performing music. The choice is between continuing decrease in overall functioning or not. This is just a suggestion. There are probably other ways to balance your activities to avoid the deprivations of lack of sleep.

    1. This is where the difficulty comes in: Since the way I do music these days is ensemble-style, the time it takes isn't really flexible. It is, in a binary way, optional. I have to find other players when and where I can. Musicians hours do not conform to anything that works comfortably with an 8-5 work schedule. Work is where the 'give' needs to be, but it is not flexible enough. The real answer, if it comes to that, will be to retire from work, so I can sleep as I need to, without conforming to the arbitrary work-week hours. As you point out, I have chosen not to retire, the incentives to stay on the job for another 8 months are that compelling. Therefore, balance requires sacrifice, and, to be honest, I'm not at that point yet...
