Awareness, by it's nature must transcend complexity. We, by our nature must become conscious at this level,as well.
ReplyDeletei just had this thought. Does it ring true? anybody who reads this , and feels like it, please answer. i always need other perspectives on new thoughts.

I am not sure. I think you mean that when we understand/become conscious of nature, the complexity (and nature seems very complex to me), is transcended and understood in a way that seems simple. Are we saying the same thing?
Deletei was using the word nature intending one of it's secondary meanings, specifically: "The set of inherent characteristics or properties that distinguish something"
DeleteIn attempting to explain what i meant by this statement, i realize that definition is needed, specifically for the words "awareness", "complexity" and "conscious". i will think this through, and will provide these, relative to the context in which i used them. i probably should have done this before i posted the thought to your blog.
i am tempted to reject that thought., as i try to define awareness and consciousness distinctly i cannot make them two separate phenomena. There do seem to be differences, but they are different only in perspective. i cannot separate awareness from consciousness. They seem to feed off each other.
DeleteAs far as transcending complexity, i'm going to coin a new term - vertical time as a second dimension of time, existing only now, qualitatively,, as opposed to the horizontal time we experience quantitatively, to explain our level of awareness, and thus the consciousness from which we operate.
This is as close as i can come to explaining it. i realize that this isn't really an explanation (at least, it is not yet acceptable to me)., but it may be a beginning. An exercise in rationalization.
i just realized that, while the term vertical time is mine, the concept is inspired from a book i read many years ago - "Living Time" by Dr. Maurice Nicoll. Nicoll was a student of Gurjdieff and Ouspensky, and ran his own workgroups until his death (i'm not sure when he died, this book was written in 1952). i think it was very influential on the direction of my thinking about time.

My comment used the word differently, you didn't need to correct what you wrote.Re-reading your comment, I find the error is in mine, not yours. I don't know if it is the nature of awareness that it transcends complexity, and I don't know if it is our nature to become aware. Rather, I think it is in our nature to desire awareness without knowing where it leads. This desire, however, seems to be typically motivated by rewards we think/guess/hope will come to us when we become aware/conscious. I think this fallacy, though, is the chief motive for becoming 'aware' or 'conscious' and I don't think we understand it until it happens. For instance, for me, it being in a state of awareness produces happiness and joy, even while I may, at the same time, be active and doing highly complex things (like playing bass - hey, no jokes here!). Is this what you mean by transcending complexity? I think we humans do this a lot, below the level of awareness and consciousness. Touching your nose with your forefinger involves almost 300 muscles, countless neurons, etc. all being controlled below the level of awareness. The conscious suggestion to do an action starts off a chain of thousands or millions of micro-events, all of which happen without our thinking about them, or being aware of them. Is this transcendence? I don't think it is awareness. Also, in this example, awareness of all these actions would be paralyzing. So, I'm not sure. Maybe awareness of all the internal physical processes doesn't count, or maybe when you are aware and conscious at a level that transcends complexity it's all taken care of effortlessly, and out of sequential time.
ReplyDeletei don't think we become aware and conscious, rather we ARE aware and conscious.

i really enjoy typing those words!
Your example of transcending complexity is a good example of what i am talking about It is awareness and consciousness that enables you to operate in different levels at the same time. Thinking and intellectual understanding are not fast or agile enough to participate in the actual happening.it is the "immediateness" of awareness and consciousness that allows the joy and happiness.

We wrote (or at least posted) our last comments at the same time. This seems to be appropriate, as to me, going by your final sentence, we seem to be headed to a similar understanding. i can live with your conclusion as easily as with my explanation.
