New Year's Resolutions: I don't make them.
But I do make some decisions.
I have decided to use this blog to document my trip to Thailand (it was a request). I have also decided to buy a scale and check my body weight. I will try to take pics of the food I eat, but since I expect to eat 100% of my meals in public, it will not be complete: I don't want to be obnoxious to other diners. Also, I may not always be know what I'm eating (language barrier). I'll play that one by ear.
I've also decided to get serious about reducing my possessions - something I was supposed to start quite a while ago, but abandoned when I decided not to move overseas as soon as I retired.
Okay, that is pretty much it on the 'resolutions' front.
Last night's New Year's Eve gig was a pleasant lightweight affair. I guess it was better than I anticipated. I don't like the venue and I don't like the owner, but that is off of some experiences there that are now over three years old. Still, he's a cheap bastard, and going back more than 50 years, I have never known anybody to play a NYE gig for the $70 per man he was paying. I like the guy who put the band together for this gig, and when he asked if I would play with him on it, I accepted without knowing the details. If I had been asked to play this venue for that money up front, I probably would have refused.
Going into the gig, I had some concerns that I wouldn't be prepared - of the sixty songs on the list I was given, there were ten I had never heard, and another fifteen or so I wasn't very familiar with, or thought they might be too tricky to play without rehearsal. I did some preparation, but really didn't put in the effort required to master the list. Given the venue, maybe I was reluctant to work for that.
My concerns were overblown. There were some screw-ups, but nothing serious, and no more than the other guys were doing. It was an easy, fun gig. I got to work with three musicians I knew, but had not worked with before, only jammed with two of them once or twice. The mood was light and easy. All good.
Today is about year-end bookkeeping, trip preparation including housework and storing my music gear, and a party.
I couldn't have planned this, but I notice the New Year's Day blog is my two-thousandth. Starting the year on a nice even note!
I will be a very lucky guy if this coming year is nearly as good as 2017 was. But, I'm the luckiest guy I know. And damned grateful for it, too. Happy New Year, 2018.

Diet Comment
I'm sure I gained that pound on last night's New Year's Eve gig, which had a carb-heavy buffet, and more than my usual amount of alcohol consumption. Also, I have decided to continue my blog during my trip to Chiang Mai, more for documenting my adventures than tracking my weight, but I just might buy a scale and do that, too.
