File in the 'Foibles of Being Me' folder:

I got my passport Wednesday, and very early today (like, actually, Thursday night) I finally pulled the trigger on a JFK to Chiang Mai, Thailand ticket.

It started out being crazy cheap - I was so happy. Then I bought all kinds of trip and service insurance, which brought the cost up to $800. Still cheap.

I had been planning this trip since my friend Jerry told me about the new low-cost air carriers that had started routes between the US and SouthEast Asia. I was having a lot of trouble finding good dates for it, though.

I had been trying to go in February, but I have plans to go to Mardi Gras in New Orleans this year. I'm going to parade with my friend Kokomo Slim's Krewe there. I can't pass that up (although my one and only past experience with it, as a tourist on the sidelines, wasn't so much fun, being in the parade on a float sure seems like it would be).

Looking nearer in, I have my birthday parties the last weekend of January, but the air fares in the beginning of January are much higher. So, at two o'clock this morning, making one last calendar check, I bought a ticket in March.

I'm an impulsive idiot. Sometimes, anyway. Twelve hours later, I realized I had screwed up, and had bought a ticket for a time during which I had at least two booked gigs. I just remembered that while I was talking about it to my friend Jerry.

I went back to check my calendar, thinking I must have only made a mental note about those dates, not ever put them on my calendar, but when I checked this time, there they were. That's when I realized I had been looking (on my calendar) at March of this year. Doh!

Having spent almost $200 for various kinds of trip insurance, I was not charged a rebooking fee, which would have been $350 - but there was a much smaller service charge. But my new flight was almost $300 more expensive, so I ended up having to pay an additional $325 additional for the new flights. I had to bite the bullet on that, as I would have lost more by canceling the trip altogether, and I still wanted very much to go.

I could have been very upset, and maybe I should have beat myself up about it. Instead, I quickly forgave myself and let it go. I'm going to Thailand in January! A trip I've wanted to take since I was a child, and a place that's been on my list of retirement destinations for decades, usually, and currently, at the top of that list.

Icing on the cake: With the new dates, there is about a week when my friend Jerry, who booked his trip there, though beginning and ending in Bangkok will be able to meet up with me. I'll be able to hang with a great friend in Chiang Mai. Happy dance!

I am so grateful that I can do this. So. Very. Grateful.
