#2325: Monday, August 19: The little things that fill my day

Here are the things I do regularly. They're what I mean when I say I'm not doing anything when I'm not playing.

I make meals. Which you already know. I rarely make meals ahead of time, but since I'm cooking for one, there are sometimes leftovers. They still need to be prepared, though.

I spend a little time learning Spanish on the Duolingo website. That started about two weeks ago. Now that I've pretty much decided to move to Latin America, it's prudent, and Duolingo is easy and fun.

I write 3 pages in 'Write your Words', a website that exists for that singular purpose: writing 750 words (3 pages) spontaneously and privately. It seems like an excellent way to get some fresh insight. I'm not there yet - my writing tends to be overly organized, even when that isn't a necessity, or desirable.

I play many games of Sudoku. About a dozen years ago I heard it was good for mental acuity, kind of like weight-training for the brain. I got into it. Now I play online. I like my games relatively short (quick satisfaction) so I play at the medium level consistently. The web site keeps statistics and gives you points for successfully completing a puzzle, which it resets every month.

I do a quick update, or, if there's nothing to update (rare), a quick review of my finances. This is a very long-term habit - I started doing it in the late seventies, just making a budget, and knowing what my financial resources were. When,
in the mid-80s, IBM gave me a copy of Dollar$ and $en$e, the first personal finance PC software, I got hooked on keeping track of my spending vs. income. That has been very helpful to me, and the only time I didn't do it was during my second marriage, when I only knew about some of the money and expenses. Mine.

I review my investments, including market news regarding them and other possible investments. Every day when the market is open, I update a spreadsheet I wrote to track my investments (after the close).

I check my mail, deleting everything where somebody is trying to sell me something. I read about Cuenca and Chiang Mai, I get newsletters about both. Once a week my brother sends an email designed to inform the family that he and Denie are alive. And, to check on whether that's still the case with me. It's a good thing. If I die in my apartment, nobody will know for days...

I check Facebook. I try to spend no more than ten minutes on Facebook - only things personally interesting to me get more than a glance, and I don't usually scroll my newsfeed. After I check my notifications, there isn't much I want to do on FB.

That's my everyday. It mostly takes place on the computer, mostly in bed. I do all my work in bed.

I'm grateful every day I wake up.

Because a friend I made recently was going, I went a little far-afield to hear the band of another friend of mine playing.

It was in a biker bar with a tattoo parlor in the back. It was in the 'North Country', the area between Syracuse and the Canadian border, about one hundred miles.

My friend Deborah is a remarkable woman, and my friend Frank and I met her at the same time. Frank is in hot romantic pursuit, I really want her as a friend - I think she is admirable and formidable.

Anyway, except for the drummer who is new to me, I know everybody in the band, Scotty and the Rules.

I admit to being a little surprised when they invited Frank and I up to play. Except for the drummer, everybody else in the band stepped off the stage, and Frank went into a medley of rock songs, and gave me good cues.

I think it went very well. We had white people dancing, and not a single dirty look from Frank (indicating a missed cue or a wrong anticipation.

So, success.

We played for twenty minutes, and then everybody glad-handed everybody. All good.

I'm grateful for these opportunities, for the good times I never expect, that seem, these days, to show up nicely.

I am going to start a new program of free-writing 750 words a day.

Free-writing means stream-of-consciousness, no-editing writing. I have heard it is a very good thing to practice, with some of the same benefits as meditation, and that it can be very beneficial to attaining, maintaining or improving your connection with your unconscious, unaware mind.

That is the kind of mind that I believe really runs the show, most of the time.

On a side-note, I performed my version of Elvis Costello's Alison tonight for the first time. Needs work, but I was happy with the rest of my performance.

I'm just happy to be adding things to my life right now.

#2322: Wednesday, August 14: Just another good night playing

I went to Shifty's tonight. Nothing unusual about that for a Wednesday. That's when Shifty's has their open mic, which I have been a regular at for almost ten years now.

Shifty's is a classic neighborhood bar, and it is appreciated by the neighborhood. It has live music four nights a week, plus an open mic Wednesdays. The audience is built in, so it is almost always full, and when a popular group is playing it can be packed and, no denying it, uncomfortable.

That rarely happens on open mic night, though.

The host band tonight (they change hosts every month) was Big D. That's for the lead singer and guitarist Dave, who used to weigh over four hundred pounds until he got surgery and lost over a hundred pounds.

Along with Dave is Rolland on bass and John on drums. This trio used to host the Wednesday night open mic at the (world-famous) Dinosaur BBQ, which is where I met them - it was the second open mic I attended in Syracuse.

So, we're all old friends. And we play together like it. Moreover, I got some good playing time, including a set where I backed up a singer-guitarist with John on drums, and I will not be surprised if that set isn't the highlight of my week.

The bartenders, Molly and Angie, know what I drink (and when).

I always see friends, tonight being no exception.

On a beautiful Summer night, you can hang out on the porch and talk.

Talking with friends, playing good music.

I'm all gratitude. This is the life I love.

#2321: Tuesday, August 13: The illusion of knowledge

Post 2321

I have stopped believing that I know things.

I realized this today at my weekly dinner/music trivia night with my friend Al.

Al thought I knew a lot about music. I thought I knew a lot about some music, but knew I was ignorant of certain genres, and modern (say, the past thirty years) music in general.

What the music trivia game has shown was that we both overestimated my knowledge.

It is my understanding that this is a common human flaw. We tend to think we know a lot about what we know about, and we're generally wrong.

You can know a lot about a specific thing, but even slight generalization from that thing leads to overestimating our knowledge.

The other thing is, we 'know' some things that are just plain wrong. Why we have this misinformation doesn't matter. Certainly, some of it comes from assumptions that what is true for one thing is true for another; that we can correctly deduce information from a limited base of knowledge, and, of course, from being outright misinformed in the first place.

It's all gotten worse thanks to the internet, the greatest source of information humans have ever known, and also an endless source of misinformation disguised as truth.

So I have come to mistrust my knowledge - and yours, too.

If we don't know what we don't know, and some of what we do know is incorrect, knowledge may not be the best way to decide what actions to take.

I'm grateful to at least have a bit of an understanding of the limits of what I know.

#2320: Monday, August 12: Food shopping

I do most of my food shopping at BJ's Warehouse. My secondary store is Wegman's, then the Regional Farmer's Market and Aldi's.

I get most of what I need at BJ's, though. Which means I buy in quantity. It is interesting the way that affects how I, living alone and preparing 95% of my meals in a typical week,  eat what I buy.

For one thing, it means that when I buy smoked salmon (BJ's has the all-time best prices I've ever known for smoked salmon - it is less expensive than what I bought in the '70s!), I will be eating smoked salmon every day (almost) until I've finished the package, meant to feed six people.

It also means I can keep getting my favorite salad blend - Organic Super Greens - by the box, and using it to make the really huge salads that are a regular and large part of my diet. When I talk about eating a salad at home, you have to understand, I eat out of a salad mixing bowl - what you would put in the center of the dining room table when feeding four-to-six people. It's a very high-quantity affair.

Whenever you see kale and spinach together, that's from a 4-pound bag of frozen, organic, chopped kale and spinach. I use a lot of this. It is the main ingredient in all my smoothies, I have it with eggs frequently, and it is a feature in my curry dishes.

Since my food menu isn't really all that varied - one of the things I learned when I was losing weight was that when I eat for health - which is all the time I'm eating on-plan - was that I don't need a lot of variety in my diet.

I think that is one of the things that also affects my food choices when I travel, in a kind of inverse way.

I am very grateful for the way my life-lessons, as painful as many of them are, has led me to a place where I am not very anxious about eating now.

Okay, I did this to myself. On the plus side, I just read that weight is really measuring the amount of water in your body - most of the rest of your weight doesn't really vary that much day-to-day. I think I've always known that, but reading it in plain simple language really brought it home. Nonetheless, I can see the weight on me, and I do want to take it off. Starting today.

When he heard what was going on with I am Fool, my friend Frank stepped in - saying he'd try to use me whenever he could.

Frank is a guitarist (he actually started on drums, and plays bass and keyboards, too) who tours with the Grammy-award-winning Jamaican reggae band, Black Uhuru. He is a Syracuse native, and lives in a trailer that has a kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and a recording studio. It's known as the Wailing Trailer., which is where I am Fool's first album (Freak in the Machine) was recorded, and where there are fifteen tracks waiting to be completed when J. can sing again.

Since then, I have spent quite a bit of time playing with Frank, and I'm better for it.

I think Frank is a fabulous musician and a good man. He's a bit eccentric, or out-and-out crazy, depending on when you meet him. He is self-deprecating and funny one moment, and raving about some social or political situation the next. I have seen him moved to tears in sympathy with some victims at one time, and with some abstract musical concept another.

He is very good at all the things he does. In addition to music, he makes his day-to-day living with the stagehands union (which overall pays better than his touring and local music ventures).

I met him about nine years ago, when I was jamming reggae music pretty regularly with a drummer in Frank's local band, Reggaedelica. The drummer brought him around, but never told me his background. He was just another yankee playing reggae. He played well, but my first impression was that he was a little bossy.

Which turned out to be fairly accurate. Frank likes to run the show. What I didn't know (at all) then, was that he was absolutely capable of running the show, better than almost anybody, and his talent, skill, and experience justified his attitude.

At that initial meeting, he invited me to sit in for a set at a gig he was playing the next week. I still didn't know a thing about him. Before the show started (I had previously met the bassist in the trio, and was concerned that I would fit in, as our styles were very dissimilar), we had a brief conversation where he told me some of the songs we might get into, and urged me to follow him. I told him I was pretty good, I'd do my best to make him look good. He said, don't worry, just try to stay with me, and I'll carry the whole thing.

He was much more correct than I was, but it did turn out well, and after my half-hour, I got complimented (especially by the sound man, who told me I was a dream to do sound for - he got a great bass sound from me).

I've never been his regular bass player, but on a couple of occasions he's subbed me in for the odd gig. One of my favorite live recordings is one I made at a low-volume gig we did, after only a few hours of rehearsal. I love to listen to the quality of Frank's performance. It was a good show.

We'd jammed together a bunch, but that gig was the first time I ever rehearsed with Frank. That was about four years ago, by which time we were pretty close friends.

It was that friendship that led me to introduce Frank to my bands. There was lots of jamming going on, and I brought Frank into the house band of an open mic I played at for about four months, with really positive results. That is how I try to give back a little.

There have been other rehearsals recently, in front of a few more gigs. I've come to better understand what he wants, and I appreciate the investment he's making in me. Frank has played with excellent bass players, he really can pretty much choose who he wants. It's a bit flattering to be chosen to join those ranks.

This week, I've been rehearsing and playing with him a lot. There's even a free gig coming on Saturday, with a short preview played tonight. I always feel like I'm a better player around Frank, even when I screw up and get the evil eye from him.

I'm grateful for his friendship, and all the ways he helps me.

#2317: Wednesday, August 7: Customer service

Post 2317

I always think it is good to realize, when you're having a transactional relationship with other people (which is a lot of the time), it is important to understand who the customer is, and then give them good service.

Sometimes the customer is your boss. Sometimes the customer is a friend offering or receiving a favor.

In music, I find there is often a misunderstanding among musicians as to who the customer is. As a bass player, I am almost always providing a service. My customer is sometimes not the person paying me. Sometimes it is the singer. Sometimes it is the audience.

Giving that person good service rarely means playing the most challenging bass line, the most sophisticated bass line. It usually means providing the kind of bass that drives the rhythm without drawing any attention to itself.

Sometimes it means playing a bass part that is a bit less interesting. Sometimes it means playing a boring bass line.

Whatever.

I always have tried to give my customer(s) good service. Memorable service.

Generally, that means putting their wants and needs above my own.

I think that's a worthwhile thing to do. I think it is consistent with my values. I think that it is the kind thing to do.

For instance, at one rehearsal a while ago, a drummer was complaining that he didn't like the rhythm of a popular song that the bandleader had rearranged, because that audience wouldn't like it. I took him aside and mentioned that it wasn't his job, in this case, to please the audience. The audience wasn't his customer. The bar owner wasn't his customer. The bandleader was the customer, and satisfying the audience and the bar owner was his job. The bandleader overheard, and walked over and hugged me.

I'm grateful for whatever clarity my understanding of these relationships gives me - I feel I benefit from it.
