Journal
(written 12/15/18)
Read this once (it won't change for the rest of the trip(s): I'll be linking this post to its associated photo album on Facebook. If that's how you got here, here's some background: About 8 years ago I started this blog as a food journal. I had a medical situation and needed to lose weight. Initially, that's all I did here: Journal my food intake and my weight. It contributed to helping me lose 20+% of my body weight in 6 months, and continuing has kept me on track since then. I started adding commentary after a while, but lately it has become infrequent.
While I'm traveling, I let go of the weight-tracking and food journaling, except for the occasional food shot when I've eaten something interesting. And that's where we find ourselves now.
The trip from Liverpool, NY, USA to Lisbon, Portugal was the most exhausting trip I've ever taken. While the flight time was half that of my trip to Chiang Mai, Thailand eleven months ago, the actual travel time was only a couple of hours less, and far less comfortable. I am unhappy with United Airlines, who re-programmed my non-stop flight from Newark to Lisbon to a stop-over in Amsterdam, three hours further away, with a five-hour layover, and then the most uncomfortable flight (tight, non-reclining seats, no entertainment options) ever.
My first view of Lisbon, from the plane as we landed.

There was some confusion when I finally got off my Amsterdam-Lisbon flight, because I walked from the gate straight out to the airport exit without going through customs/immigration. After being guided to a local official, I found out that the ten-second stop I made through customs in Amsterdam ("What is your destination?" (Lisbon) "Are you traveling on business?" (No) Passport stamped) was all I needed, because, you know, it's all the European Union. Oh, the civilization of the EU.>

My host had given me simple directions to take public transportation - the Metro, Lisbon's subway system - which was closer to the airport exit than any of my arrival gates were to my departure gates this trip - and I stepped right onto a train that reminded me of the subway trains of my youth in New York City, except brighter and cleaner. One transfer and twenty-five minutes later, I set foot in Lisbon for the first time, only to be unable to find any street signs to tell me which was the one that led to my AirBnB.

So I asked the first person near me where the street was was. It turns out, given a binary choice which corner to walk to from the Metro station, I guessed wrong and had gone a block out of my way. The stranger politely pointed back from the direction I'd come. When I got to that corner, there were again no street signs, and a confluence of three streets as well, so I asked a cop, who smiled and pointing, said, in English, "You're on it now." I proceed up the steep hill, backpack-laden, cobblestones underfoot. Lisbon is as hilly as San Francisco, apparently.

It is a two-block walk, uphill all the way. I arrive, sweaty, at the address, and call my host (WhatsApp). A minute later, Maria appears smiling at the building's outer door to let me in. We take a ride in the smallest elevator I've ever been in to the 3rd floor, and she leads me to my room, through a kitchenette, showing me all the locks I have to open along the way, as she gives me a handful of keys. It turns out, when I come home at night, I will have to use five keys and a five-digit keycode to get from the street-front to my bed. I've never felt more secure.

The room-with-private-bath I expected turns out to be a little apartment with a balcony, possibly, at some point, butler's or maid's quarters. The unnecessary TV is tiny, the WiFi is great, the furnishings tasteful. I'm good, but still very tired.

I ask to be excused, so I can take a nap. In my home time zone it is 11:15am (4:15pm Lisbon time). I left for the Syracuse airport almost twenty-four hours ago. I undress, get into bed and fall asleep immediately. I wake up eight hours later, still a bit tired. I unpack, set up my computer and phone for the WiFi, make a few calls to let people know I'm safe, and start doing some research on my specific location and it's relative distance from restaurants, although I'm not at all hungry. I do tend to let my appetite lead me in exploring new places.

Then I go back to sleep.

I wake up and take a shower in the spa-like bathtub. The bathroom is very pretty, tiled and everything convenient.

I do some more computer stuff (I spend a lot of time on my computer, always), make some more calls to friends back home. It is 6pm by the time I'm ready to set out. On Maria's recommendation, I try a neighborhood place, a ten-minute walk away.

But first, some more calls, some Facebook time replying to posts, and then, I'm out.

I use google maps for walking directions. This time, I am directed down some very steep steps, and my walk to the restaurant has very little level ground. It is around 8pm. I fall in behind a young woman walking alone. I'm not stalking, but we're walking in the same direction, and she is walking at a comfortable pace, so I follow her for a few minutes. It occurs to me that it has been a while since I've encountered a woman walking alone in the city at night. She makes a left, I make a right. I'm on the phone, wanting to show my friend Jerry what this area looks like - it is old, worn, lived in and very beautiful to me. I walk past my last turn, end the call and I'm at the restaurant in a minute.

This is what Charrusqueira da Paz looks like from the outside.
Charrusqueira da Paz, which I think translates to Barbecue of Peace, is a hole in the wall that comes highly recommended. I am seated almost immediately at one of the half-dozen tables. Looking around, I feel right at home, the clientele is eclectic, casual, and fairly hip-looking (but what do I know). I have fish in mind, but I see that there are no filets on the menu, and I'm not down about getting precisely surgical with my food, so I opt for a mixed grill of pork, fatback, and sausage.

I order bread and butter (not complementary, but worth a Euro), decline the olives, get a jar of the house red and a bottle of water. I've already resigned myself after looking at neighbor's plates, that fries are on the way. I never order fries with anything, typically. No big deal.

The food comes quickly. The waiter, in good English, suggests I rub the lemon on the pork to bring out the flavor of the rub. I do on one piece, then compare with the other. I should never doubt the man bringing my food. It is very flavorful, and the home-made sausage, which looks very hot dog-like, is also a nice rush of flavor, with some good spicing.

The house wine is great - maybe the star of the whole meal. By the time I've finished what appears to be a little less than a litre, I'm pretty high. Another diner takes the last chocolate mousse in the case, so I finish with an espresso, and start my walk (uphill, all the way, this time).

Google sends me on a different path back than the way I came. After a few blocks, I turn and am facing a very large and official-looking building, beautifully lit in warm, orange-y tones and contrasting blue inner lights. I take a photo. I'm semi-drunk, not tipsy.

Further up the block, I pass a couple kissing. Makes me smile. I walk into a convenience store and buy a big bottle of water. I drink a lot of water. The tap water is potable, but the big bottle will be convenient in the bedroom. When I get, somehow, back to the steep steps I came down earlier, there are four teenage (twenty-something? I can no longer reliably tell) boys singing good harmony. I don't recognize the song, but the harmony is tight. I listen for a minute until they finish, looking somewhat embarrassed at this accidental audience. I compliment them, one thanks me in English. It's time to climb the stairs.

That is a workout. When I have negotiated my way back to my room (remember the five keys and the key-lock? It's harder when you're drunk) I get a call, do some writing, do some facebooking and suddenly, it's 4am.

I have found Lisbon very charming my first night. I'm grateful for the day. I sleep another solid eight hours (something I never do). It's 12:15pm on a Saturday in Lisbon, and I'm grateful, and I'm writing this, on and off, for the next four-and-a-half hours.

Tomorrow is the day I prepare for my trip to Lisbon - I fly out of Syracuse Wednesday morning.

I am not certain what the exact form my blog will take while I'm gone. I may buy myself a scale and weigh myself daily in Lisbon, unlike any of my previous trips. My thinking on this is that this trip is the longest I have taken since the early 1970s, and it's immediately followed by another equally long trip, then another - if I don't do this, I will go approximately three months without recording my weight, including the last three weeks of this year and the beginning two-and-a-half months of 2019.

I may not publish my weight here in this blog, until I'm back in Syracuse in the Spring, but I need to keep a record of my weight.

Today I spent some time in prep for my trip by ordering my prescription refills and checking my flight times, and finally dealing with Verizon FIOS: Arranging to upgrade my internet when I get back, suspending my service while I'm in Lisbon and cancelling my TV service with them - I will have much better internet and losing the TV will save me a little more than a hundred bucks a month.

That adds an item to my list of things to do to prepare for my trip on Tuesday. Other items on that list include the trivial (make copies of my passport, picking up already ordered-and-paid-for packing cubes) to the mundane (picking up my prescription refills, so I have enough to last the thirty days I'll be gone) to the compex: Packing. Which is why my next blog post will be from Lisbon.

Yes, I expect to be busy-busy on Tuesday. Which is why my next blog post will be from Lisbon.

I am excited. Very.

But I am also maintaining some detachment. I am almost exactly as prepared as I was for the trip to Chiang Mai at the beginning of the year. Lisbon, although number 3 on my list, is the most recent addition, and I think Europe is the most unlikely place for me to settle post-Syracuse.

I go with little knowledge about Lisbon, preferring to learn about the city through immersion.

I am making an adventure out of relocation-expatriation.

I want to try and get an idea what my life would be like if I lived there. That will be my focus, and that will be my guide.

I am grateful for the opportunity, and more, for the good fortune that permits me to meet this opportunity. Next time I write here, it will be in the Travel format, and will be from Lisbon.

This is so totally expected, and, once again, I'm not going to be alarmed. Two hundred pounds has been goal weight for seven-and-a-half years, and, although I do want to lose some more weight, doing it five days before my first visit to Europe in fifteen years? I'll do my best, and be happy with that. Today.

Although yesterday's bad eating didn't register as a bad day - it might be worse, because the day before is only an estimate. However, two days in a row, caught out without a good eating plan will not pass without notice, and will not good for the chart.

I take it as a given that shit happens.

It happened to me today, and it happened early and it rolled downhill, derailing much of the rest of my day.

We are talking about major appliance failure here.

The dishwasher in my apartment broke, and flooded the kitchen. It ruined the kitchen rugs, and six bath towels and a mop weren't enough to dry things out, as there was a slow leak. Pushing a rock up the mountain.

The maintenance guys were great once they got on the scene (pretty quickly, actually).

Things I didn't get to do because the kitchen was useless and there were people in the apartment included weighing myself and preparing meals.

Not that big a deal in the scheme of things, but it made the weight- and food-journaling aspect of the day moot.

I had a recording session to go to in the afternoon, and that turned out to be quite the slog, unfortunately. Still a good time, just not as productive as I'd hoped (it was my session).

Midway through, though, I got a call telling me the dishwasher had been fixed, I was good to go.

And when the session was finished, I got to go and play at one of my favorite jams, and had a very good outing.

After that, I went to hear one of my favorite solo performers at his regular gig, saw some friends there, and the rest of my night played out nicely.

I am grateful the day was like a lotus: beautiful flower above the water, roots in the mud. What a life.

I knew this was coming. Friday, a party, a long, party where they never ran out of snacks and alcohol. Saturday, a party, catered, all pasta. Sunday, a party/recording session with a mountain of Greek pastries and pizza, eight-and-a-half hours worth. Also, did I mention alcohol and pot? Parties all weekend. Gaining only just over three pounds is a miracle.

Comment
Today seems like a good day to comment on the journey.

I got down to my lowest weight since I started this blog, and I'm kind-of still looking to lose more weight - my new 'ideal' is 190 pounds.

That will be for next year.

I'm a dozen days away from starting my Winter-anywhere-but-Syracuse, leaving for Lisbon for a month. That will be followed by a few days to re-pack, then leaving for Chiang Mai for a month. After a few days to re-pack, I'll drive down to Florida for a few weeks, followed by Mardi Gras in New Orleans, followed by a few days in North Carolina on my way back to Syracuse.

That nearly continuous time away poses a challenge to maintaining this blog.

I am actually contemplating buying a scale in Lisbon, so that I can continue tracking my weight without a three-month gap. The bigger problem will be keeping track of the food I eat, since I will rarely be cooking for myself, and think it is likely that I will eat stuff I can't identify. At that point, I guess, there will be a lot of pictures, which might not be so bad.

Then the commentary becomes more of a trip journal, and the food section stays what it was, and includes the charts, finishing up 2018 and starting 2019. Even typing it just now, I realize this idea has a lot of appeal.

An awful lot of people have asked me to write about my trip, in the most flattering terms: By immediately responding, when they learn about my travel plans, with excitement to "read all about it." I've lost count of how many times I have heard people say they're living vicariously through me. Like I said, flattering, and I'm susceptible to flattery.

In fact, tonight, I was cornered by a musician who laid it on very thick, complimenting my bass playing, my coolness, my 'awesomeness'. He wanted me to join his band (another member had asked me, also, as had the current bass player). The attraction to joining the band is that I really enjoyed playing with the drummer when I finally did a few weeks ago. He was the first person to ask if I was available to join the band.

I told him I was, at the time, a month away from leaving town for three months, and felt that quarter-year absence pretty much disqualified me for new band commitments. I already felt bad for my current band mates.

And, that was my reply tonight - I'm gone until Spring. To my great surprise, the immediate response was, "Will you join in the Spring?" I told him then that I was in two bands already, and that conflicts would not be resolved in his favor. It was harsh, but honest. I did tell him, to soften it a little, that I had never, in all my playing years, failed to show up for any gig I committed to.

His reply? So, that's a yes, right? I'll be the bass player in the Budd Zunga Band starting next March. Maybe. A lot can happen between now and the first gig. But Budd's a good guy, and Dave Clement, the drummer, is the shit. If it does happen, that is going to be one fun rhythm section.

I am so very grateful, and thankful, for the oh-so-interesting twists and turns of my life.

What a way to end the week! My lowest weight of the year. Happy dance. I celebrated at a gig-party, and the other events of the weekend, including another party and a recording session, probably mean this low will be gone by Monday, but that's a concern for then. Meanwhile, I've clearly established a trend, and have something to celebrate...

I actually thought my weight was going to go up - it seemed to me I ate a lot of food yesterday, a little bit of which was off-plan (corn). But, no! I dropped a pound, instead. Why? Who knows? But I'm happy about it, and grateful for this good-looking post-LA chart (note declining trend line).

Well, that was quick! I really bounced right back, possibly thanks to a lot of bowel movements last night and this morning. Apparently, my strange eating, plus all the time I spent driving, slowed my digestion down. Back to normal, now. That being said, today's meal at Limp Lizard could easily reverse the loss..
