#2240: Monday, April 15: Full musical circle

On the one hand, I ate a bunch of party food over the weekend, and drank a lot, and gained weight.

On the other, my Syracuse music experience came full circle.

When I finally went out to find the musical community in Syracuse, about five months after I arrived here, my entrypoint was the Sunday night blues show on Public Radio.

Airing from seven to ten Sunday evenings, it was hosted by Tom Townsley, a master of the blues harp, who I have gotten to know, and played with in the ten years since he was just a voice on the radio.

At nine every Sunday, he would announce, "The music at Rooters Bar's blues jam is just getting started around now." At the show's close, he would announce, "I'm getting ready to go down to the blues jam at Rooters - see you there!"

So, in December, 2008, I went. I had no expectations. I googled 'Rooters' for the address, brought a bass with me, and got there just about nine-thirty. My feeling was, I might play, I might not. Just checking the place out - it was reconnaissance.

There were some musicians playing when I got in. I studied the signup board, which was like nothing I'd seen before. It was a whiteboard with a grid, and people signed up to play a set based on their instrument. I signed up for the first available slot on the bass row, but needn't have bothered - as the song being played finished, I was immediately asked to get up and play.

Now, two things - I was rusty, not having played at all in more than four months, since leaving North Carolina, and that made me a little nervous; and I was lucky, because my set was with some good players, mostly from the house band - I've gotten to know them better over the years, and count them as friends. The set went well.

When the playing was done, I got to actually meet several people, and got my first dose of the warm, welcoming Syracuse music community.

Among the things I learned that night were where there were other open mics I could play at.

This was Ground Zero for my Syracuse experience. Everything good that has happened to me in Syracuse originated from that first night at Rooters.

Fast-forward to last December, when Jimmy Rooters sold the bar (he wanted to retire - it had been up for sale for about a year - to husband-and-wife musicians Lenny and Heidi, friends of mine. When I left for Lisbon in mid-December, the bar was going to close for renovation and waiting for licensing for the new owners. A month later, Jimmy died suddenly, unexpectedly. I was in Chiang Mai. I wrote a eulogy for him on Facebook, and it was one of the most 'liked', commented-on posts I ever made.

The bar officially reopened Saturday, It has a new name, Valley Blues House, even though the old Rooters sign is still up.

I got there at three PM, thinking that was when things kicked off. My plan was to stay and play awhile, then do some grocery shopping, errands, eat at home, and come back for a while in the evening. Instead, when I got there, my friend Frank, who was finishing setting up the PA, asked if I had a bass amp with me (I did) and I became the house bass player.

Sometime around a half-hour later, I played the first live music in Valley Blues House. A thrill and an honor.

There were no other bass players for the next five hours, and I played most of that time. I also played an hour out of the next three, then I left for the night.

I returned the next night for the first regularly-scheduled resumption of the Sunday night open mic, and got some good playing time with more than a few players I hadn't seen since I left for my winter travels. The weekend was a blast, a total blast.

An aside: I went for a surgical consultation today, to have him assess what to do about the small, completely symptom-free hernia my doctor discovered last year. He and his nurse (and I) all agreed there was no reason to do anything except "keep an eye on it". So, more joy!

What a life! I'm so grateful!

All right - there's no way to sugarcoat what happened, eating-wise, this weekend (pun intended). I was out of control on Saturday, eating sweets and drinking through an eight-hour party where the only food I cared for was the desserts - brownies, cookies, cake - and lots of beer and lots of whiskey. Then Sunday was a ton of food, mostly but not entirely on-plan, but just a lot. Maybe I should be grateful that now I only have five-and-a-half pounds to lose.

I must admit, I wish when the scale finally moved it had moved down, but it wasn't to be. A slice and a bear, and I'm up half a pound. That's what a slice and a beer will do. So it goes. I'm hoping for a good weekend - I should be able to avoid temptation.

This has been my weight seven of the last ten days! I find that statistically amazing, and, over the last eight-plus years, unprecedented. I don't know if it means I'm doing something right or wrong or, most likely, it has no meaning at all.

It has taken a long time - really, almost two months - to get over being replaced in Modafferi.

During those days, most thoughts I had about the band were unpleasant. While I was (and am) disappointed not to be making music with that group, by and large, getting fired didn't weigh me down much at all.

The fact that nobody in the band ever - has ever - spoken to me since an uninformative conversation with Tami about what was going on (in mid-January, when she answered a call I made from Thailand), that bothered me. A lot.

I don't understand it. They seem to want me to just fade away, so they can be done with me without having to do anything.

They have not returned calls, they have not answered texts.

However, this past Saturday I did get a message saying they were going to use another bass player at that night's gig - two hours before the gig started. I have no idea what they were thinking about me that they thought that was, somehow, necessary. I'm assuming they meant no harm, but did they think, after weeks of silence, that I hadn't figured that out?

But I'm glad they sent it. I stopped out to listen to the lineup, and see whether there was a musical reason to replace me - if the new bass player improved the band. The answer was 'no'. I'm relieved, because that means they're just opting for someone who's available year-round. That is a legitimate reason. And there are probably other non-musical reasons - the new bass player is a close friend of theirs.

As far as the way it was handled, well, after seeing the new lineup, I don't care. At least, I can stop myself from wondering about it all the time. It will be whatever it becomes now that the bandmate relationship is over.

That night, in the ensuing hours, enjoying another band in another club, I was able to let it all go.

Big relief. Because I was stuck, and knew I had to let it go. My 'letting go' exercise, despite repetition, had failed me. Seeing them perform without me turned out to be cathartic.

The very next night, I got a new gig with my friend Frank Stepanek. That's the way it works.

I'm really grateful.

#2232: Wednesday, April 3: Senior moment

Post 2232

Today was a day full of 'senior moments' for me.

After a day of doing pretty much nothing, I was rushing to make breakfast, when I managed to drop a plastic bag onto the hot cast-iron frying pan where I was making bacon, ruining both the bacon and the pan. I'll miss that well-seasoned, decade-old pan.

Then, when I went to select a bass to bring to the open mic I was late for, I couldn't find one of my most-used and most unique basses, the '66 Precision I had rebuilt myself.

I couldn't find it! .

I grabbed another bass, and drove to the Moondog's Lounge trying to remember the last time I'd played it, and how in the world I could lose track of something so precious. And thinking about what I would do if it had been stolen, days ago, and I hadn't noticed.

I had a pit in my stomach.

I put it out of my mind once I got to Moondog's, where friends I hadn't seen I started my winter travels took my mind away from all problems, and the playing was just as joyful as always - no room for bad thoughts.

Then I left for the open mic at Shifty's, hosted by one of the first open mic bands I ever played with in Syracuse, and where I'd promised to back some guys I'd met at an open mic the night before. About three hours had passed since the 'where's my bass' question first came up. During the half-hour drive, I was having a lot of trouble remembering the exact last time I'd had it out.

And then it clicked: Shifty's!.

At the end of the night at the open mic there last Wednesday, a bassist friend asked if he could borrow the P-bass for a gig he was doing with another of my friends, to see how the band leader would like a bass set up like mine was (I have a particular setup based (no pun) on my old-school preferences. He never expected me to agree, but I did without hesitation. Although the gig wasn't until the weekend, I told him to take the bass with him and return it to me the next week.

And then I forgot about it. I literally forgot about it,  put it right out of my mind.

Sheesh! So, no problem, other than my declining short-term memory.

Meanwhile, nobody in Modafferi is talking to me. They have a bunch of gigs coming up, I'm obviously not playing them, but their ghosting me has upset me. It seems less like being expelled from a band and more like a group of friends turning against me.

On the other hand, I've been playing a lot, and getting some really positive feedback. One woman told me she'd never liked a song I did until she heard me sing it. A few musicians have complimented me, saying they've never heard me sound better.

In the moment, everything is what it is, and, I must say, to quote John Lennon, there's "nothing to get hung about".

It's alright, and I couldn't be more grateful.
