Is it okay if I'm a little sad that I end this year with a gain? I do. It will pass quickly, even as I write these words, because, although I did not achieve my new weight goal of 188, I am still under the original goal weight I defined for myself on New Year's Eve 2010. I have maintained my original loss for more than fifteen years.

Good enough. I'm smiling.

Okay, that's all the food/diet writing I'm going to do this year, except to highlight interesting (or particularly photogenic) restaurant meals over the next four-plus months I'll be away for the Winter. My Travel blog will start appearing irregularly beginning sometime around the second week in November (I'm leaving for LA on November 6, and will arrive in Chiang Mai for a two-month stay November 14). I'll be back to food journalling sometime in April.

NIce! I've mentioned before that a loss after a weekend of untracked eating and drinking feels good, so this is welcome. My efforts at self-control with no accountability paid off. Of course, it more often doesn't, but I'm forward-looking.

Wow! Just as I wrote, yesterday, about the coming weight loss, I have this inexplicable result at today's weigh-in. I expected a loss. I had nearly duplicated the meals that produced a nice loss the day before.

I think unexpected results are the essence of comedy, in a different way than they bring on madness (doing the same thing and expecting different results...). I'm laughing madly.

Nice loss! I hope it's sustainable, and have great expectations that this is the start of my winter weight loss pattern: When I start traveling (typically at the end of November, this year at the beginning), I have about four months of no food logs, no weigh-ins, no home-cooked meals. But the quality of the food in Chiang Mai and Cuenca is so much higher, and my daily movement a multiple of my at-home typical, I lose weight. Last year, I lost more than any other year, but I come back from my Winter travels with a significant weight loss, and start gaining it back in the Spring, peaking at the beginning of the summer and then trending down towards my next winter trip. This year, the gain has been dramatic, the loss less so. I'm excited to be less than three weeks away from leaving.

Any loss after the weekend is welcome. Since I don't log my meals on weekends or holidays or when I travel, it is always gratifying to see that this lapse in accountability doesn't crash and burn my plan for maintaining my weight loss.

It's been working for me for more than fifteen years.

11:25am: Breakfast quesadilla (eggs, prosciutto, Swiss cheese, lentils, onions, cabbage, high-protein wheat tortillas). Brussels sprouts.

I find the continuation of this losing trend very satisfying. I am also happy with some new additions to the pantry: IQ Bars and zero-carb tortillas. Both are lower calorie, lower-carb substitutes I find effective and good-tasting. No trend is permanent, and they break easily, but this is good while it lasts.
