#2524, :Wednesday, October 14, '20: I am Fool

Post 2524

Daily Comment
October 14 marks the tenth anniversary of my joining I am Fool, the group led by J. Brazill.

It's been an amazing time.

When I joined them, I was unemployed. I was living in an apartment with my friend and guardian angel Al Olin. I was collecting unemployment. I was 'working' at finding a job.

I weighed over two hundred and fifty pounds. I had been moved by my doctor from pre-diabetic to a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes.

I had become a regular at some open mics. Fearing what was in store for me in the future, mainly whether I'd be staying in Syracuse, I had turned down some good offers to join some good bands in the past year. I didn't feel it was right to commit.

I had just made my life-changing decision to be happy a few weeks before.

So, one September Thursday, over ten years ago, I was at the open mic at Mac's Bad Art Bar, my home away from home. This was one of my favorite open mics, and I almost never missed a Thursday there.

I had already done a set which featured me playing bass on a few numbers and getting to sing lead. As I got off stage, this guy who'd been dancing on the sidelines for my set congratulated me and complimented me.

He was about to go on with his band.

The band was a three-piece unit with two guitars and a drummer. The dancing guy did all the singing.

I watched the set at the front of the bar (back of the dance floor) standing next to Pat MacMurray, the 'Mac' of Mac's Bad Art Bar.

Normally not appreciative of bass-less bands, these guys did a couple of original tunes, and I nudged Pat and said, "These guys have something. I really like them."

When their set was over, I went over to the leader, the guy who had been doing all the singing, and complimented him. Told him I hoped they would come back the next week, I'd like to hear more.

Which they did. This time, the house bass player (an excellent bass player) joined them on stage. I spent their whole set thinking what I would do as opposed to what he was doing. He did a good job. I thought I would do better. I also realized then that I liked their original songs much better than I did the cover they performed, a mashup of 'Feeling All Right' and 'Iko-Iko'.

After that set, I walked up to talk with the lead singer, who told me his name was Jay, and said something to the effect of, "I don't know if you have a bass player who couldn't play or don't have a bass player and don't want one - because you don't need one, you sounded great without one - but if you DO want a bass player, here's my card."

I didn't know that the week before, after I'd first heard them play, J. (I found out that was how he spelled Jay) had gotten into a conversation with Pat, and Pat had given him some constructive criticism: "Your lead guitar player has to step up and step out more. Also, you should get a bass player. I know a good one who liked your group, you should see if you could get him, his name is Reverend Ken."

J. gave me a home-made CD of song demos a couple of days later. Then he called me to see if I could make it to their next rehearsal. I remember the phone call because I was driving on a rainy night in Brooklyn, where I was visiting my brother and sister-in-law. Two days after that I went to my first I am Fool rehearsal, and met Mike, the lead guitarist and John, the drummer.

We hit it off right away. At least, that's how I felt.

Going back to Mac's the next Thursday, we debuted as a four-man group. That was October 14, 2010.

I felt totally at home with these three. I felt immediately accepted. I immediately was invited to join J. at his family for Thanksgiving, then by John for New Year's Day. Mike, of course, invited me into his home, since that's where we practiced.

That sense of belonging fueled my enjoyment of making music. In fact, my biggest 'problem' with the band was that we didn't play together enough. I loved the music we made. I loved being a Fool.

My appreciation of the band, which, a couple of years later included multi-instrumentalist and back-up singer Tamaralee, has only increased and never waned. I am in awe of J.'s songwriting skills, as his songs were what first attracted me to the band.

I joined other bands over the years, always being up-front about my primary band being I am Fool. For the most part, that meant my time in those bands was short. As soon as there was a schedule conflict that wasn't resolved in their favor, I was out.

Over time, my belonging to I am Fool has brought me more happiness and satisfaction than I would have ever dared hope. The band has become my family.

I personally think we're one of the best bands around. Our indescribable music being a favorite of many club owners, although we have never become popular enough to bring the big audiences that would ensure regular gigs.

We made our first and only CD (so far) about two years later, at which time Tami joined and made us a quintet. We probably lost money on the CD mostly J.’s, I think... But I'm proud of it, I think ‘Freak In the Machine’ still holds up.

I know a lot of people who love I am Fool. I almost never go out without having to answer questions about where we'll be next. Our fans, few as they are, are really, really into us.

Happy anniversary, J., Mike, Tami, and John. I am Fool. I love you guys.

I went to see an orthopedic surgeon today.

My knees were x-rayed. Replacements were discussed. It's a forty-five minute operation, then three months of physical therapy, per knee, done consecutively.

But, no sooner than a year after my heart surgery, which puts the start date somewhere in the late Summer, early Fall of 2021.

I need to line up a place to stay where I can get help in the period immediately following each surgery, for a week, maybe two.

Something to look forward to. My knees have negatively impacted my lifestyle for a long time, and I will be very happy (well, happier) when they're not an issue.

The only thing is, I thought this appointment was about my peripheral artery disease in my lower right leg, not about knees at all. Fixing that problem, which has been bothering me since Lisbon, almost two years ago. It's also something my cardiologist has given me approval today before the normal one-year waiting period.

I'm going to get a stent in my leg, and I'll be walking out of the outpatient procedure when and where it's done. The dye-injected test that determines where to put the stent is something that was scheduled in August, but the appointment was canceled due to my heart attack.

I need to get that on track.

I'm grateful for the possibility of a better future.

#2522, Monday, October 12, 20: Ruminating on the pandemic, a little

I felt guilty about Friday night, when I went to hear some live music and ordered dinner and sat in a room with about two dozen people (total), maskless.

It was legal and as safe as those things can be, but it was still more exposure to Covid than I've had in the last eight months.

But - I'm craving human contact, especially anything resembling the kind of normal contact I made going out to clubs and bars and restaurants while performing or supporting.

I see Jam Club in Lisbon and Boy Blues Bar (and other places I know) in Chiang Mai doing fairly normal business (Jam Club looks like nothing ever happened). I get nostalgic. Of course, I can't go to either of those places, not for at least five months (when my cardio rehab ends). I get wistful.

I feel, to a degree, that my whole happy lifestyle is on hold. When I indulge myself (not often, and only in short bursts), I worry that what I enjoyed here is gone forever. My life feels incomplete.

There is, though, another reality: I had about as major a surgery as can be had without loss of organ or limb, and I would be missing most of the activity that I'm missing due to the virus anyway. In that sense, at least, there could hardly have been a better time to be convalescing.

But: I would still have my social venues, and now, nine weeks after my surgery, I would be out among friends. That, the virus has taken away from me. And the taste I got Friday was just so pale compared to the last time, in early March, that I went out.

Still, I'm full of gratitude for all the wonderful things I do have, which are abundant. And I voted today, so there's that.

Most of the damage done over the weekend was actually done Friday, eating two consecutive meals (the second one of which was decidedly off-plan - I'm talking about you, giant, delicious Reuben!) thanks to my going out to eat (ordering dinner was actually a requirement to listen to the entertainment) for the first time in seven months.

I went to a restaurant today.

Wonderful friend Deborah called me up to ask if I could come out, where to go, and I had a friend playing at a place I knew - she picked me up, we went.

My friend was playing, and, although all seats were supposed to be reserved (social distancing), we managed to snag a table.

Once you got to the table, you could unmask.

I realize now that I let down my guard - this is as unsafe a situation as I've been in since the pandemic started.

i hope my luck holds.

I'm grateful for my friends and hopeful for the future (still). Also, today I voted.

No change is better than I expected after all the Wholesome Medley - a high-calorie mix of nuts, dried fruit and dark chocolate - I ate non-stop beginning in the afternoon. Although I slept better, which may have everything to do with not gaining weight, the sleep bar is pretty low, and better is still a distance from good quality and quantity of sleep.

#2520, Thursday, October 8, '20: Heart monitor

Have I mentioned my monitors? I have two, for a while.

I got the Fitbit Charge 4 a couple of days after I got out of the hospital. I wanted to monitor my pulse and, for the first time in my life, my sleep. It's been great for both, revealing that my sleep problems are anything but imaginary.

I love being able to check my pulse all the time. It's good information for me. I've been having episodes where I feel pins and needles in my shoulder. unlike my 'heart attack', these are anything but subtle. I was worried that it was due to episodes of A-fib (atrial fibrillation), but the Fitbit says no.

Which brings me to the other monitor, which I've been wearing since Saturday. It is an attached, always-on Electrocardiogram monitor, and broadcasts its readings to a lab in New Jersey.

I started using it by making a recording, which is sent automatically, and following up with a call. This is the base-line reading, taken when I was relaxed and feeling 'normal'. After that, if I feel any symptoms or have problems, I can make a recording, which will be reviewed (an immediate follow-up call to the recording is mandatory) for any signs of a problem, and, if needed treatment.

Yesterday, I did a recording during one of my pins-and-needles in the shoulder feelings. On my follow-up call, I was reassured there was no heart-related problem associated.

I'm grateful for the sense of relief that gives me, but more specifically, for the great medical care that I somehow have lucked into getting.

I don't have much to say about my day. I got some heartbreaking news, Mac, the American bulldog I lived with when I was staying with Melissa and J., had to be put down.

Only one week after Reggae, Marco and Sophie's Irish Wolfhound, my constant companion in Florida for the last six years, was also lost.

I feel the loss as if it were people. For the most part, dogs are better than people.

Me? Over the weekend I didn't do much, but Mitch the maintenance man came and replaced my door-buzzer/intercom, and now I can get packages! In the nine years I've lived here, I've only gotten two packages that needed signature. I've had to pick up every other shipment from UPS.

I really didn't do a lot. There was some TV. I went over to Darren's, he needed to get high, I could help.

The weather has been Fall-perfect. Night's are cold already. Leaves are turning, looking like it's going to be fantastic season. I'm grateful for that.

Nothing day. I had big plans to take out the garbage and do a load of laundry. I didn't even do that. I did do some trading, successfully winning my way back to profitability in my tiny daytrading/swingtrading/gambling account.

I am still feeling well, still feeling better every day.

Mostly.

Even though I never went on the stairs today, my knees are acting up. I can't wait to get new ones, probably twelve to eighteen months out now.

I also spoke with my friend Anthony, who I met in Cuenca. He shares investment ideas with me. He is such an amazing guy. Very honorable, very compassionate. He is the most likable Trump supporter I've met, and the one who convinced me that all his supporters aren't total assholes. Looking at what he does, it's impossible for me to understand his politics. I don't try.

So, a lazy day with lots of portfolio work and even more TV.

I'm grateful for my friends, and all my resources - spiritual, community, financial, physical - I take none of it for granted.

#2515, Thursday, October 1, '20: Toilet time

What did I do today? I fixed my toilet. I played in an online poker tournament (and lost early - after winning last week's.

I am feeling capable. I am feeling well. The toilet problem was great for me - not too easy, thanks to ridiculously, needlessly complex instructions on one of the simplest parts of the toilet, the flush handle.

I actually started the repair Wednesday (after manually activating the flush from the tank all morning), but the replacement I got from Home 'Despot,' "Good for almost any toilet" didn't fit mine. They left out, "... with the flush handle on the front."

Mine is on the side of the tank. No dice.

So today, at the crack of Noon, I set forth to argue with Customer Service about giving me a refund or credit, when I had pretty much destroyed the shrink-wrap packaging. It was actually pretty easy. A fity-cents-more-expensive, more adjustable handle did the trick.

As opposed to the installation, which was made ridiculous by the terrible, translated-into-English by someone only passingly familiar with the language. Anyway, I finally got it installed and working. But I needed a shower by the time I was done.

I have a regular Thursday night poker game. Online, of course. All the players are either living in or relocated from Raleigh, North Carolina. Last week, I won the tournament. This week, after some excellent early play, I think that one or two of the players discerned my strategy, and I just started losing hands I'd been winning.

I was the first person eliminated. I had the chance to buy back in, but just wasn't feeling it. I logged off, got out my phone, took a Spanish lesson, and went to bed.

I'm grateful to be able to take care of myself.
