#2587, Monday, January 18, '21: Sentimentality

One effect the pandemic has had on me (or it might be aging, or my heart attack, but I think it's the isolation of pandemic safety) is that it has brought out and exaggerated a side of me that is very sentimental.

I cry at heartwarming stuff on the TV (can't make it through an episode of Atypical without tears).

I don't confuse sentimentality with nostalgia, either, although i have always thought they went hand-in-hand. I don't spend a lot of time feeling nostalgic. I have no longing for the past. I have no inclination to idealize the past. Yet it seems thata even without nostalgia, I am mawkishly sentimental
.

Instead, I find myself lingering over pictures of my great-niece Penelope as she becomes a person, delighting in her discovering new abilities as she transitions from infant to toddler. And watching heartwarming dramedies like Parenthood, This Is Us, and Atypical. And weeping happily.

I'm grateful for the acts of kindness, real and fictional, that I find so moving

#2486, Friday, January 15, '21: Moving abroad

Daily Comment
I think I have wanted to live overseas, outside the US, for most of my life. The first time I remember feeling like that was in the late Fifties, when I saw the movie, "The King and I".

I was very taken with the story of someone moving to a country with strange customs and language, and, of course, the movie makes it all look gorgeous and exotic.

A few years later, for a report for my 7th-grade social studies class, I visited every embassy from a Latin American country I could find in New York, and collected all their pamphlets extolling their country's virtues
.

I got the idea for that from the early Sixties hit TV show, "I Spy". Like everybody, I was taken with Bill Cosby, first black lead in a primetime television show, but it was actually Robert Culp who intrigued me. And, of course, all the shows took place in foreign countries and were replete with travelog footage. I loved fantasizing that it was me in all those places.

Fast-forward a year or so, to a family trip to Niagara Falls taken in the Summer of 1963. Canada! It meant a lot to me, just knowing I was in a foreign country. I swear, looking back I can see my delusion, but I thought everything looked different, a couple of miles to the other side of the US border. Better.

Side note: On the motel television in Niagara Falls, I got to stay up and watch the Jack Paar show (the immediate predecessor to the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson). This particular night, he showed a film he'd gotten from England, where 'the crazy teenagers' were going insane listening to a 'goofy-looking' rock'n'roll band. The first footage of the Beatles in the US. I started high school two months later.

I went, as an innocent tourist, to Jamaica in 1968. And then, almost every year after until 1983. I went to the same place every time. I got to know people. Mostly, I went with friends. A few times I went alone, and met friends, Jamaican or repeat Americans like myself.

At the end of the decade of the Sixties, December, 1969, I made a trip that set the pattern for all my traveling after. With no real plan, I went to Europe, specifically to Spain, and after a few days I ran down my friend Marco in Ibiza - which is a great story in itself, but not relevant here. Here, the point is, I started traveling alone.

I didn't stay alone, but that was the way I traveled, and I established that as my favorite mode. In fact, I never again had as good a time traveling with a companion or companions.

My Jamaican experience established another feature of my personal travel style: I always have only one destination. No multi-country, or even multi-city tours. This is less a hard rule, there is always the possibility of finding oneself with downtime in one place when something specific in another beckons. In the last fifty years, this has happened twice.

In the mid-nineties, I encountered a magazine, International Living, that actively promoted the idea (which had already occurred independently to me) that living outside the US, looked at by so many Americans as an undesirable compromise of a wonderful lifestyle, had many advantages.

At this time, I was very unhappy. I was in an unhappy marriage, and an unhappy job, and feeling a bit isolated from my roots, and the idea, in the back of my mind, took hold.

By the late-nineties, I had a list of places I was looking to 'retire' to. I didn't have a good idea of what that meant or exactly how I'd get there, but my financial prospects were pretty good, and I thought I might have an early retirement from my coming wealth.

That didn't actually work out, timing-wise. But I was hooked. Everything I read (and continue reading to this day) convinced me that getting out of the country was a good idea. Initially, it had been strictly a proactive move, now there was all that plus a very negative view of American politics and social structure.

These were the forces that kept the idea and my enthusiasm alive for these twenty-five or so years. I planned to leave right after I retired in 2016, then postponed it, primarily to stay in the music scene, and keep my band i am Fool going.

I visited the place at the top of my list, Chiang Mai, Thailand, for the first time in 2017. I stayed for a month. I loved it. It was better than I expected. I wanted to move there. Then, the next year, the government changed the immigration policies regarding residency visas, and it was hostile to my plans. It was still fantastic, but no longer a place I was going to live.

In 2020 I discovered Cuenca, Ecuador, and, since in the previous year my two biggest musical projects had ended, in one case, and gone dormant in the other, I decided to move.

Then came the pandemic. When I got back to Syracuse mid-May, I was set on my November departure (I'm going to vote, then leave). My best local friend (and leader of i am Fool) took it hard. He took the time to write me a long e-mail to convince me to stay. It worked, insofar as I decided, given the situation at the time (I couldn't get into any of the countries on my list at that time due to COVID-19), to postpone my departure until the pandemic was over.

Then came my heart problems. Now, I don't know. I still want to emigrate, I still dream, as I have for all these years, of waking up in a not-American place. The politics of the last decade in this country have been very troubling. My finances allow me to stay, but I would thrive (financially, at least) in a lower-cost environment.

I still look at Cuenca's online 'newspaper' and classifieds every day. But... I don't know if I'll ever get there. And I never checked out Medellin or Montevideo, both real possibilities.

But now I have health concerns. And now, i am Fool is once again - for the second year - in a precarious place, and I love this band. I leave, it's over.

So, maybe, if I live long enough, I can realize my dream of a life in a place where I can get everything I need and most of what I want, in a pleasant, winter-less  environment where my age is not a hindrance or severe limitation.

I'm grateful for my dreams

#2585, Thursday, January 14, '21: Spanish lessons

Post 2585

Daily Comment
Last week, I achieved a year-long streak of Duolingo Spanish lessons. Every day for a year (three hundred and seventy-one, as of today).

Learning a new language is one of the best exercises for the brain. It is recommended for third-agers like me to ward off senility, dementia, Alzheimers. (I also play Sudoku every day, and do crosswords).

But brain health isn't the reason I started learning Spanish. Originally, it was forward movement towards moving out of the country, where my destinations were 100% Spanish-speaking.

I am casual about my lessons. For one thing, I don't expect I can reach my (probably impossible) goal of fluency through Duolingo. It is a step on the way. For another, there will be no grade, something that ruined the Spanish classes I took in Junior and Senior High School (which I detested).

My attitude is, put in the time, and what sticks, sticks. What doesn't will eventually be repeated until it does. As to that, I try to put in some time every day (which I have been successful with). And when I get to my Spanish-speaking destination, take one-on-one and group classes

I have no idea, now, if that will happen. The original, pre-pandemic, pre-open heart surgery plan had me moving to Cuenca last November. That didn't happen, and my move date is now very open-ended - I admit, I am increasingly unsure that my expatriation will ever happen.

Tomorrow, I'll talk about that.

I'm grateful for the place I'm at now, well into my recovery, with the end of pandemic restrictions in sight and an unknowable future that I feel happy to embrace

I don't know if my weight is the same as yesterday's, actually. It is not scale weight, I could not weigh myself on an empty stomach, which is what I do, normally,  weighing myself right before I eat breakfast. #2583, Tuesday, January 11, 2021: LOOP recorder installed

Post 2583

Daily Comment
Today I got a Medtronics LOOP recorder implanted in my chest. It is a battery powered device that records ECG data, analyzes it, and if it finds an abnormal pattern, broadcasts to a lab, which immediately makes two calls: To me, so I can make and transmit the actual recording (up until now, there's only the analysis), and then to the beautiful Dr. Hana Smith (my cardiologist, who performed the procedure, and who I have an unrequitable crush on). (I just made up the word unrequitable, but you get the idea).

The procedure was performed in an outpatient surgery center that is part of the hospital/medical group I am in (St. Joseph's, which I tell you because if you are ever in Syracuse and need anything medical done to your heart, I cannot recommend this hospital and associated physician's practices highly enough).

Literally everybody involved was cheerful and, while we had to wait about a half-hour for the Medtronics trainer to be ready, the actual procedure took less time than the betadine skin disinfectant to dry - literally, one minute from cut to bandage.

The entire thing, from registration to recovery and 'device training' took about two-and-a-quarter hours. There was a second of sharp pain, from the local anesthetic injection, and that was all. Once the implant site was numb, there was no pain involved at all.

Dr. Smith greeted me with a warm, "There's my boyfriend". She explained, accurately, as it turns out, everything that was going to happen. In response to a couple of questions, she told me that the implant should not inhibit me in any way, I was free to travel anywhere in the world. She canceled the prescription for the anti-atrial fibrillation medicine. And she gave me permission to drink alcohol, but not a lot. Still.

I drove myself to and from the thing. All good. No pain, no problems. I had stocked some of my favorite foods, knowing it would drive my weight up the next day, and at 5pm, I had my first shot of whiskey (Jameson's Premium Select 15-year) in almost six months.

I'm grateful for the luxury of excellent medical care i enjoy. I didn't really earn it, and I cannot take it for granted

I installed a fancy new shower head today.

It was easy, and it works great and is a big improvement over my previous perfectly adequate shower head.

If anybody asked me what I did today, that's what I would tell them: I replaced my nine-plus-year-old shower head with a better one
.

It's just one thing, but a lot of recent months have included days where I did not do one thing. So, it's a bigger-than-usual deal. Awright, me.

One thing that is productive or creative and not, strictly speaking, necessary was my minimum per-day goal before the pandemic. During, I have relaxed my standards and my goals. Now, maybe I can return it to its proper place among my priorities.

I'm grateful for being able to imagine a future that i have no expectations of

I don't know if this week is going to be typical of the year. I kind of hope not, I am hoping things open up, and I can resume my social life.

I did get to spend a little time in the physical proximity of some friends this week. I hope as things progress, that expands and increases exponentially.

I got some good news on
the band front, as well. It looks like we'll be making some videos and putting out a CD early in the year, so that's something - a big thing to me.

Yesterday I got a COVID test (just came back negative) to prepare for getting a LOOP ECG monitor implant on Tuesday. I actually don't expect that to materially impact my life - my hope is that the two medications I started taking while waiting for this procedure can be discontinued.

I hope i move more as the year progresses. I had a good start until they canceled cardiac rehab and i let things slide.

I hope this is the year i get it together and unload my huge quantity of possessions, 90% of which I have in case I need them in the future (and haven't needed any in years).

I'm grateful for all that I have, I don't take my good fortune for granted

I got tested for COVID-19 again today. It's my fifth test since May.

I have 't been thriving under the pandemic restrictions. I will say that the lockdown has been, for the most time, the best time to be recovering from a heart attack. Lifestyle-wise, I didn't miss anything in my recuperation i wouldn't have missed if I'd never gotten open heart surgery.

Yes, I'm following the silver lining playbook.

I am missing my lifestyle, and I haven't found any substitute activities - zoom meetings, new hobbies, self-improvement projects - inspiring enough to compensate, even in part.

So it goes - that's on me. I'm the one who smokes the pot, I'm the one who turns on the TV, or opens up the computer.

I'm biding, and abiding, anyway. I'm waiting to see what my world is like in six months. I'm looking forward to that adventure.

I'm grateful for all that I have, and certainly not dwelling on what I don't have

Nothing natural happens in a straight line, I guess. If you look at my weight chart for any time period, when I was using actual weight (not estimates for periods when I wasn't home and not weighing myself), there are no straight lines for more than three days. My understanding is, that that is normal. Anyway, the trend is down, I'm happy.

#2578, Tuesday, January 5, '21: Semi-better sleep

Post 2578
- 10 years and 5 days since I started this blog -
New Year's Eve, 2019, Los Angeles, California
Daily Comment
Since I got my Fitbit, I've been tracking my sleep, and I've improved a lot.

I got the Fitbit a week or so after my quintuple bypass surgery, a couple of days after I moved into J. and Melissa's living room.

The history of my sleep problems goes back to when I restarted playing bass in the early 1990s. After that, I started going out sometimes at night to clubs where I might get the opportunity to play, something I hadn't done since I moved out of New York City fifteen years earlier.

Those would be late nights, during the workweek. In addition to staying out late at the club, I was so energized it was difficult to fall asleep after. And there was always work in the morning.

This pattern held, and became more fixed and more frequent at time went on, and was exacerbated by times of emotional trauma: the death of Nell, the collapse of my second marriage, the move to Syracuse.

In Syracuse, where my entire social network was musicians, and my social life tok place mostly in bars (pre-pandemic), over the past ten-plus years it had gotten fixed: Going out most nights until late - falling asleep in the early hours of the morning, waking up after about four hours sleep.

Back in my old software engineering days, there was a saying, you can't improve what you can't quantify.

The Fitbit allows me to quantify my sleep in quantity and quality. In the beginning, both were low, although given my changed circumstances, already better (I figured) than they had been.

I was getting about five-plus hours of sleep, with a low score (Fitbit scores each night's sleep based on total amount, amount of REM sleep, amount of 'recovery' sleep, and amount of restless sleep. My first score, with just over five hours sleep, was in the high 50s, and was the lowest score I ever got.

In the four months since then, I have gotten to the point where I average over seven hours sleep a night and my scores are never less than 70.

I'm grateful for life in constant change, with the hope of improvement
