Big day for me today.

Four weeks and a day past my quintuple bypass.

The mail brought a gift from Alex: A t-shirt saying "I survived quintuple bypass surgery and all I got was this lousy t-shirt".

It was also the day that my lift restrictions went from five pounds to ten pounds, much more manageable.

And, I now have medical permission to drive.

So, after an early dinner, Al drove me to my apartment, where we picked up my car, drove it to Al's to put air in the tires (all a little low, one was low enough to trigger the tire air pressure sensor)(Al has a compressor in his garage).

Then I drove back to the apartment, climbed the twenty-one steps, let myself in, and... finally... shaved. I've been waiting since August 8, when they told me I couldn't shave for fear of cutting myself and bleeding out, to shave. Mission accomplished.

I gathered up a few things (shaving and trimming kit, sweat pants, regular pants, a couple of long-sleeve shirts, a multi-adapter for my phone and other chargeable things, my CBD oil, pot and smoking stuff) keeping the ten-pound carry limit in mind, and walked down twenty-eight steps to check my mail - nothing.

Al had ridden his bicycle to my apartment, waiting downstairs to make certain everything was okay on this first time home in more than a month. Have I mentioned I have the most wonderful friends?

I'm grateful for my progress, and for all the people - medical and otherwise - who've cared for me since I went to the hospital early in the morning of August 7.

It's Labor Day.

I have nothing planned, nor did anything happen over the weekend.

...except for one little thing: I had my first pain-free day since my surgery on Friday.

Just under four weeks since my surgery (today is the actual 4-week anniversary).

Tomorrow's a big day, but that's really all I have for now.

As always, I'm grateful for my life, my friends and everyone I love, and for the health I'm recovering from the brink

Almost nothing really happened today.

I did get to have lunch with my friend Al, my most loyal visitor.

I did do two flights of stairs (17 steps per flight, which is three or four more steps than it takes to walk up to my apartment from the entrance).

I did finish watching season one of 'True Detective'.

I got some sun in my face.

So, even though almost nothing happened today, I'm grateful.

An easy day. Nothing really happened.

Oh, there was a nurse visit, but nothing new. My vital signs are good. I am healing very well.

I am not complaining, but then again, I have nothing to complain about.

Instead, I cannot take my good fortune for granted. I'm grateful for my life.

A good day.

I took my first shower in almost four weeks. That was nice.

I did a flight of stairs for the first time in that long, as well.

I'm feeling well. The pain that's left is quite localized around the surgical site.

I'm grateful for it all!

Again, no rhyme or reason to these extreme daily variations. Not that I won't take a loss today - I'm back below (barely) the trend line.

#2493, Tuesday, September 1, '20: Cardiology appointment

Just over three weeks after my quintuple bypass surgery, today was the day of my long-awaited cardiology appointment.

My cardiologist is the lovely, Prague-born Dr. Hana Hoyt Smith.

She was the cardiologist who saw me first when I came into the ER. She prescribed the catheterization that revealed the extent of the damage, and that I required bypass surgery.

Here's a weird thing: She visited me in the ICU, post-op. At that time, I hallucinated that she was pregnant. Until today, I wondered how I missed that in our first meeting, only to realize that I was simply seeing things in my post-surgical drugged-up state.

I'll cut to the lede: My post-open-heart-surgery progress is "amazing".

That is the verdict from the nurse who examined my wounds, and seconded by Dr. Smith, who told me that she was "shocked" how quickly I progressed, to be able to be discharged after only four days post-surgery.

I am immediately able to take a regular shower (I've been doing sponge baths with special, hospital-supplied soap per instructions since the surgery). I am also now able to practice stairs.

In one week, my lift restriction goes from five pounds to ten, and that restriction will remain for at least two months, although the standard is three. Also, next week, I'm approved for driving.

When can I start taking care of myself? When I think I'm ready, keeping in mind that I'm going to need help with groceries, carrying anything over ten pounds up the two flights of stairs to my apartment until my lift restrictions are removed sometime in December.

I will also be prescribed cardiac rehab as an outpatient. Unfortunately, due to being closed for months due to COVID-19, it will be a few weeks before I can start that.

I couldn't be more grateful to the doctors and friends who are taking care of me while I recover the ability to take care of myself.

I can't explain this gain. Well, maybe I can, by yesterday's four meals, one of which consisted of a very large portion of dried fruit and nuts, which I couldn't stop eating once I started. That could have done it.
