When I tell the story about how I came to live in Syracuse, I begin with the desperate circumstances that led to the move.

Four months earlier, I had suffered a major reversal. My wife had left me when my medical problems didn't sort themselves out acceptably and the money ran out and I got fired from my job in the hospital. When the house was sold, there wasn't enough money to pay off all the debts we had racked up in our marriage.

That was where I was at: I was homeless. I was, for the first time in my adult life, in personal debt, with a negative financial net worth. I had been doing end-of-life home care for a male ALS victim, and he had gone to palliative care, so I was unemployed.

Homeless. Jobless. Broke. It's a good thing I had friends, although not all my friendships survived this low point. My best friend was so angry with me over 'allowing' my fortunes to turn around (possibly making me needier than him), that our friendship was doomed.

Counseling came from my brother. Reassurance from my sister. I was couch-surfing, so shelter came from a few friends.

I had no recovery plan. In fact, I was lost in my emotions, and feeling lost, and couldn't even formulate a coherent plan or strategy for lifting myself out of the hole I felt I was in. No plan.

A friend who I hadn't seen in some years heard about my situation and offered a solution: Leave North Carolina, come to a rust-belt, dying factory town where a high-tech company was starving for software engineers.

My son was out in California. My local prospects for employment weren't good, not having worked in the tech field for more than four years, or coded in seven. The things that had brought me to North Carolina in the first place, family and work, weren't a factor in keeping me here any more.

I felt there was no reason not to go. A little brush-up work to prepare for technical questions and I was ready (my resume looked good, I had done good work when that was what I did).

They flew me up for an interview right after Memorial Day. It was the first time I was ever in Syracuse. It was cold. The gas was expensive. I figured, get the job, get back on my feet, move on.

I got the job. It sucked. A little over a year later, the company missed getting some contracts, put itself up for sale, and laid me and half its employees off.

Meanwhile, I had assimilated into the local music scene, and found joy in playing and friendship among the players and fans. I was smiling a lot. I was comfortable.

After the axe fell, I downsized my life, took advice from that same friend who helped get me the Syracuse job, and, at age sixty, landed a job at the VA in Syracuse being unemployed only about sixty days. After the job started, I moved to an apartment walking-distance away, and went to work with the expectation that this would be my final job.

True dat.

Now, six years and a couple of months after moving up here, I have a transformed life. I have retired all my debt, and have savings. I have joy from making music here. I wake up feeling good and feeling full of gratitude.

All without a single plan coming to fruition.

I never expected to live this long. I never expected to find happiness in Syracuse. I didn't arrive alive in Syracuse this morning because of anything I planned, ever.

I woke up today with two things: A sense of well-being and gratitude for waking up (and feeling like that).

Over the weekend, I had a reunion with New York City - I have missed you so these many months when I have been too busy or too tired to visit. During my visit I did a bunch of 'first' things: Took a walk on the High Line for the first time, and that was wonderful! Here are some pictures:

It goes without saying I ate well, and in good company: My brother and sister-in-law, my best friends Merv and Lena. I was quite delighted with both the mundane and exotic things I ate.

Sunday, I had a slightly different agenda: Breads Bakery stop, then a drive upstate to a private park and a meetup with friends from my CCNY days (beginning in the late 60s). This annual event is one I look forward to. Not only do some of my best, rarely-seen friends show up (one from Mexico!), but again the food... It was a beautiful day and a beautiful setting.

The conversations, the walking, the scenery, the smiles - it was a great time, and I'm so grateful. I know, that's boring by now, but that's how I make my way these days: In and with gratitude.

Finally, after a pleasant drive back to Syracuse, I met various people who had 'ordered' from Breads Bakery, and gave them their sweet gifts. Then it was off to some fun playing at my Sunday jams. Here's video from one:

There was a downside: My immoderate eating every day I was on the road spiked my weight up to its highest point this year. But I can deal with that easily enough.

No problem with that trade-off.

More things falling into place: One band (and possibly both) have a new manager. I just signed on to be the 'house' bass player in a new open mic, beginning when I get back from my end-of-September trip to LA. This really looks good to me, as much as I love doing open mics!

Last night, at a new open mic, I heard a very good young rock band, and they could jam (!), so I had a nice set with the guitar-player and drummer.

Then I went on to the established open mic at Shifty's, where some of my favorite musicians and friends hang out, and got to play a lot, and I say that as someone whose idea of a lot is greater than most.

Tonight's gig at Margaritaville wasn't awful, and after, when I went to my absolute favorite open mic, the night got great.

Tomorrow morning, after running a few errands, I head off to NYC, to visit Andy and Denie, and Merv and Lena. I'll eat crazy-good and enjoy great company.

It's a mini-vacation!

Sunday, I have a reunion with my first college friends at CCNY, from 1967-8. That is always max fun. Finally, I'll be back in the Cuse Sunday night for my Sunday night jams. You'll hear from me next on Tuesday, when you get to see Monday's blog.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Please leave a comment if you visit my blog. Thank you!

From the "You see?" department: A few weeks ago I was all bummed about my gig at Margaritaville, and the idea that I would be playing more of them.

What bummed me out was the in-your-face soul-less commercialism of the place, and how not-me it felt.

The feeling passed after a bad weekend, when I was confused about the source of the feeling. Once I identified it, and let go, all was fine.

Last night, at a gig with the band that will be playing Margaritaville tomorrow night, I was very relieved to hear that the leader, the one who booked the gig against my advice, said he wasn't going to learn any Jimmy Buffett songs (a requirement imposed by management is to play three. Also, to take requests) for the gig, and he didn't care if we never played there again afterwards.

Whew! What a relief!

Then, today, this from Bill Murray, when he was asked, "What is it like to be you?", and decided to give a generalized, really thoughtful response.

"Let’s all ask ourselves that question right now: What does it feel like to be you? What does it feel like to be you? Yeah. It feels good to be you, doesn’t it? It feels good, because there’s one thing that you are — you’re the only one that’s you, right?

So you’re the only one that’s you, and we get confused sometimes — or I do, I think everyone does — you try to compete. You think, damn it, someone else is trying to be me. Someone else is trying to be me. But I don’t have to armor myself against those people; I don’t have to armor myself against that idea if I can really just relax and feel content in this way and this regard.

If I can just feel... Just think now: How much do you weigh? This is a thing I like to do with myself when I get lost and I get feeling funny. How much do you weigh? Think about how much each person here weighs and try to feel that weight in your seat right now, in your bottom right now. Parts in your feet and parts in your bum. Just try to feel your own weight, in your own seat, in your own feet. Okay?

So if you can feel that weight in your body, if you can come back into the most personal identification, a very personal identification, which is: I am. This is me now. Here I am, right now. This is me now.

Then you don’t feel like you have to leave, and be over there, or look over there. You don’t feel like you have to rush off and be somewhere.

There’s just a wonderful sense of well-being that begins to circulate up and down, from your top to your bottom. Up and down from your top to your spine.

And you feel something that makes you almost want to smile, that makes you want to feel good, that makes you want to feel like you could embrace yourself.

So, what’s it like to be me? You can ask yourself, "What’s it like to be me?" You know, the only way we’ll ever know what it’s like to be you is if you work your best at being you as often as you can, and keep reminding yourself: That’s where home is."

After a hectic couple of weeks, things seem to be back to normal on the job. That's a relief, I guess.

Both my bands played at a benefit last night - which makes it a very good night for me. I re-established some connections, met some new people, saw some great performances, and had a great time.

The benefit was for the son of a friend who was in a motorcycle accident, and seriously injured both legs. He was the sole support of his family, and has lost his livelihood due to the accident.

I reflect on this because it reminds me of how extremely lucky I am to be happy and healthy and able to live without compromise. Not that my friend's son can't be happy and healthy and live without compromise, but for him it is difficult, for me it is easy.

At least now. And I am mindful not to take it for granted.

I don't know if there's fate, I don't know if we're just sacks of programmable chemicals living only the illusion of controlling our own actions, our own lives. I know that right now, I am very happy with my lot. I remember that in the past this wasn't always the case. I don't have a clue how the future will play out.

Armed with this lack of insight, I had a fine meal at the famous Dinosaur BBQ (where the event was held). I did it with no regrets, even though it wasn't close to the kind of food I have decided to eat.

It was delicious and worth enjoying. A celebration of my status quo, even in violation (slight) of the status quo.

#1486, Monday, August 10: A rare musical negative

Daily Comment

After a particularly difficult couple of weeks - difficult from a workload standpoint, otherwise, not at all - things seem to have settled back to something more typical, if not normal.

An interesting thing at a jam session, in between songs on my set. I don't know what the instigating event or circumstances were, but in between the four songs that I played on there was a commotion on stage, where various people seemed to be trying to make some point or other to musicians on the set, and there were personnel changes after every song.

Now, that's no big deal. The interesting thing was, that with all the cross-talking, I got disoriented. I didn't know what was going on, what I'd be playing, or with who.

And I kind of lost it - not in any visible way, but I became acutely aware of not knowing what was going on. My disorientation led to self-consciousness and uneasy confusion.

It wasn't the loss of control - I rarely assume that I have or will have any control over what happens in a jam, and that is part of the attraction of participating. I just felt totally lost.

Because other people were talking, nodding, or shaking their heads in response, and the hub-bub was happening just a few feet away, but with all the noise I had no idea what it was all about, I felt left out, isolated.

Once the music started, it was all good again, but I had to actively let go of my negative feeling around this happenstance. I left right after I played.

Very disconcerting. Nothing to do with the music apparently (the music was fine). I was responding to what seemed to be 'bad vibes' on the stage, and I didn't (and don't) know where it was coming from.

Glad I have an internal monitor to remind me not to take it personally, and not to hold on to that negative feeling.

#1485, Friday, August 7: Cycle to intimate music events

Post 1485, Day 219 of 2015

Daily Comment

This day, hopefully, ends a very intense period at work. I have grown used to doing less, and, being lazy, enjoyed it more than all this activity.

I'm ready for the weekend. I have a bunch of friends playing around town tonight. I'll try and drop in at a few places. I have a bunch of friends playing tomorrow night, but I will be busy playing the last of a series of four one-a-month i am Fool concerts featuring all-original material, no covers. So, they can't see me, I can't see them.

My support of the local music scene began with open mics and extended to supporting my friends' bands. This has not only paid dividends, but has led me to give up other kinds of musical entertainment, like national touring groups, stadium and festival concerts, that used to be my bread and butter.

I was a regular attendee and saw literally hundreds of concerts at the Fillmore East back in the day, although by the time it closed, I hadn't been there in a year or more.

I saw dozens of concerts in Madison Square Garden, including many, many famous ones.

I went to music festivals. I went to concerts in Central Park.

Thanks for the memories, but I'm done with that. I no longer have interest in large-venue concerts or (especially) outdoor festivals. I'm done. The last one was Tedeschi-Trucks at the Beacon Theater last Fall. It doesn't work for me anymore.

Maybe I just got old. These days, I enjoy myself more getting my live-music fix among a dozen to a couple-hundred people, max, in more intimate bars and clubs, listening to my friends play.

I am more open and receptive, and I am just as likely to be entertained. Why? It feels less lonely. I am lonelier in a large crowd, and more aware of it.

#1483, Wednesday, August 5: Don't kill the groove

Please leave a comment if you visit my blog. Thank you!

Post 1483, Day 217 of 2015
- 1,678 days since I started this blog -

Daily Comment

I sometimes get frustrated when other people don't execute to my expectations. Especially when it comes to A) myself and 2. other musicians.

These days I usually have the wherewithal to catch myself, and realize that my expectations are meaningless, antagonistic, and maybe even hostile. There are few better recipes for disappointment, it is future-tripping, it is not conducive to being happy, being present.

Still, I am human, I do the best I can, but I have some sensitive areas where things I take for granted, expectations that are 'ingrained' are violated.

In myself, when this happens, I have to step back and 'forgive' myself. When its about the music, my main sensitivity is to the groove. If another musician blows the groove in a song that has one, I get a little rattled. If it a lot, it detracts from my experience, whose goodness comes from that very groove.

I play often with guitarists whose main experience is as solo performers. As such, they have never had to develop a strong sense of rhythm and timing. I know this sounds racist, but they are also all white men. They don't dance. They haven't grown up listening to music with a strong rhythm component. They come, largely, from a pop/folk background.

They don't dance, in contrast with the live music audience that goes to bars. This is a dancing, grooving audience.

So, Bradshaw Blues, which is a good danceable band, is frequently thrown off-track by the lead singer and only guitarist's lack in the rhythm department. He has written at least one song he cannot perform without butchering the rhythm. Consistently.

Tonight, it happened again. Bradshaw Blues has a very good rhythm section (if I do say so myself). In a short gig, on a couple of tunes, he just lost it, singing and guitar playing out of time with each other, and neither in time with the rhythm section.

Luckily, it was a dinner gig, no dancing, and most of the audience more involved in their dinner companions and food than the music.

But the occasions take me out of my 'joy' of playing, disturbs my 'zone', kills my groove - not in the sense of actually disturbing the rhythm section, buy the feeling I have when playing.

I need to be more imperturbable.

I don't think of myself as being that good a bass player.

I regularly see people with technical skills (and modern sensibilities) doing things on bass that are beyond my abilities. I hear lines that are refreshing because they wouldn't occur to me. I give credit and respect to many other bass players, locally and, of course, those who've risen to the top of the business for their talent and skill.

I'm fine with that. The things I do very well aren't so much about technical ability as about feel. My particular outstanding skill isn't one I see exhibited regularly, and isn't really a money-maker.

I am an excellent ensemble player with a very good ear. Ensemble playing is really the only kind of playing that interests me. Decades of playing at open mics (from a disdain for band politics) had developed my listening skills to the point where I can usually do a pretty credible job of faking my way through any kind of music.

One time, I got to a multi-band show very early, because I did not know the schedule. I met a fellow-bass player there who had come to see my band and another friend's band that played earlier than us.

The promoter of the show knew both of us, and asked if either of us could sub for the bass player of the lead-off band, who had bailed at the last moment. My friend hadn't brought any equipment, looked at me, I said, "Sure!"

The band turned out to be an all-original goth/death metal band. I asked the guitarist to give me the first chord to each song, then tried to read off his fingerboard to get the rest. It was a great success. I hit every single stop, and I didn't play anything jarringly wrong.

At the end of the set, my friend asked when I had heard the band, let alone had time to practice. I told him not only had I never heard the band before, I had never met any of the players before. My friend said he assumed I had known their stuff, I seemed to fit in perfectly - he would never have gone up there not knowing anything about what was going to be played - and he still tells that story to other bass players.

That's one of the two things I do well on bass. I reliably find a good line. I make up arrangements on the spot. That's my real bass-playing skill, and probably the reason I like, almost exclusively, playing in group settings.

The other thing I do well on bass is create, find, and sit in the 'pocket'. I'm a 'feel' bass-player, and a friend to all drummers. I like the bass to disappear into the rhythm section, and create a groove. It feels good (no pun intended). It just does. It makes me smile. It makes it effortless when I'm in the groove.

That is the part of what I do that makes people come up to me after a set and tell me it looks like I'm having a great time.

I'm a show-off, and, as far as playing bass is concerned, that is really what I have (all I have?) to show off.
